THE LONG-AWAITED GUIDE FOR THE NEW AGE OF EMPATHS!

The Aquarian Empath is a Server, but not a "Rescuer."
The Aquarian Empath is a skilled Problem-Solver but not a "Fixer."
The Aquarian Empath is a Source of wisdom and light, but not a "Savior."

The Aquarian Empath has evolved from the role-playing victimhood of the Piscean Age, to stand in the light of empowerment and wisdom as a Guide in the continuing evolution of the Planet.

An empath is one who intuitively picks up the feelings, energies, and thoughts of others. They are very sensitive, heart-driven individuals, and may be prone to physical and/or emotional challenges.

If you are an empath, you already know it all too well, or at least suspect that you are.
In either case, this is the guide for you.

In THE AQUARIAN EMPATH, Irma Kaye Sawyer speaks both from her own life-long experiences as an empath, and from channeled material received intuitively via The Keepers, her personal Guidance Team.

Essential for Empaths and Spiritual Seekers
By Moxieness
Timely, brilliant, inspiring. Irma does a beautiful job of sharing important knowledge about what it means to be an Empath and how to manage these gifts effectively. A great book to have for yourself, and to recommend to clients if you're in a healing profession. Thank you for writing and passing on your wisdom!

Accessible, Practical Guide for Sensitive People
By Sue Wang
If you are a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and have suffered angst and illnesses more than the average -this is a quick, short, compassionate book to get. I read it in one sitting. The author is spot on about how to take care of yourself energetically and physically (and more). Reading it is like sitting with a kind friend who knows what it's like to be an Empath or HSP, and she offers extra wisdom from guides in the Spirit realm, which is icing on the cake. (I read the book version.)

The Brave Ones: A Memoir of Hope, Pride and Military Service, by Michael J. MacLeod

How does the US Army mold a video-game generation with its thumbs on the joystick into a proud fighting force with its fingers on the trigger—and lives on the line—in America’s War on Terror? Michael J. MacLeod, already an accomplished professional photographer and journalist, decided to find out the hard way: by enlisting in the armed forces at age forty-one. What he observed and experienced as an embedded reporter and a serving soldier makes for an unflinching and inspiring portrait of endurance, sacrifice, discipline, and courage.

From the trials of basic training on the home front to the ranks of the legendary 82nd Airborne Division to taking fire in the hot zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, MacLeod chronicles the soldier’s evolution as only one who’s been in those boots can. Candid, wise, and powerful, his memoir takes readers on an unforgettable journey through war and allows them to witness bravery firsthand.

Review

“I’ve known a few men over forty who have enlisted in the Army. They bring a perspective and maturity to the business of combat arms not found among the twentysomethings. Mike MacLeod brings all this, along with the insights of a photojournalist and an experienced writer. The Brave Ones is a unique, inside look at modern war. Nicely done, Mike.” —Dick Couch, author of The Warrior Elite and Chosen Soldier

the story of our Brave Soldiers, the truth of how we lived, fought and sacrificed has now been told.
By Bill Chaney
Wow, great book it is excellent. Mac you have out done yourself. Not only are you one of the greatest photographers I have ever seen or know you are now one of the most forward and honest writes out there. This book floods back a lot of memories but more importantly it allows everyday people the opportunity to step inside the life of a Soldier in one of the Army's finest units, the 82nd Airborne Divisions 1ST BDE Combat Team. The story is real, lived by the writer, well written, and pays tribute to some of the finest Soldiers to ever serve this country, some who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and others that will live with scars that can never been seen. Once I started reading it to day at about 1030 I was unable to put it down, it grips you, lets you experience the highs and lows of the Soldiers, and tells the real deal not some hog washed stereotypical something that the politicians want the American people to hear, its factual honest and riveting. Mac Thank you for telling the story of our Brave Soldiers, the truth of how we lived, fought and sacrificed has now been told. One of only three books I would recommend to someone wanting to know what it was like to serve during combat in the Global War on Terrorism...............EXCELLENT

Must-read to appreciate the tactical conflict in Afghanistan and the American Soldier
By Amazon Customer
The Brave Ones is the best war memoir published in at least three decades. I have read the major memoirs published since the 60s and none come close to this. MacLeod does not just tell a story with amazing storytelling and humility - he weaves a tapestry of the of the human geography of Afghanistan, with an intense tactical picture of the conflict, while introducing the reader to the diverse cross-section of society that makes up the less than 1% who serves in America's armed forces.

People often ask what they can do to thank Soldiers for their service. I suggest people become informed concerning world events and be best able to be part of our democratic process. MacLeod's book is a darn good primer to do so.

First, this is a story of the modern American Soldier. The book gives the reader glimpses into the diverse makeup of the U.S Army. There are stories of privates through a now-general. You will see Soldiers' lives, loves, and motivations. It is an eye-opening portrayal of individual struggles and triumph. It will make you proud and cry all in a matter of minutes.

Second, this is a story of what is happening in Afghanistan at the tactical level. Readers will be better informed on the difficult execution of US policy and why there are no quick solutions. One will also learn about the complex environment that Afghans, and likewise deployed U.S. Soldiers, face while fighting an amorphous enemy.

In sum, buy The Brave Ones and read it. Then buy a copy for a retired Soldier, a policy wonk, a teacher, those who want to join the service, or anyone who wants to better understand how to thank a Soldier.

Brilliantly written, hard core, true to life, from the inside story of the 82nd paratroopers fight
By Miami
The story ended too soon. I read a LOT of military history. This is one of the best ever. He writes from personal knowledge and experience without injecting himself too much - but enough to see the reality. He honors those who deserve it and shares what the public just doesn't get about the last ten years of war. It IS war and our heroes are doing an amazing job under horrible conditions. Thanks to all of you. Thanks to Michael for a truly great book.

While Max and her team are exploring the depths of the ocean, their every move is being carefully tracked by Mr. Chu--a criminal mastermind with his own plans for the Flock. Can they protect themselves from Mr. Chu's army of mercenaries and save the ocean from utter destruction?

From Publishers Weekly
The fifth entry in Patterson's all-ages Maximum Ride fantasy/thriller series finds the teenaged title character facing her greatest challenge yet. Max, leading her flock of virtually indestructible part-human/part-bird hybrids, must rescue her human mom, kidnapped by a criminal mastermind with an elaborate plan to wreak worldwide ecological catastrophe. But in order to rescue her, 14-year-old Max and the five younger members of her flock (genetically developed by an environmental group) must team up with the U.S. Navy to determine why millions of fish are dying off the coast of Hawaii. All this, and Max is falling in love, too. Patterson doesn't spend much time on character development, opting to propel his wild story with quick action scenes, plenty of dialogue and chapters seldom longer than three or four pages; unfortunately, though, life-and-death situations are often solved by implausible plot turns. Max narrates with a precocious, snarky voice, but makes it relatively easy to jump into her complicated tale midstream. Not surprisingly, the open-ended conclusion begs for a follow-up; it's also little wonder that a movie franchise is in the works.

Grade 7–9—In this installment in the series, Max, the super-spunky, flying, mutant bird-girl and "kick butt warrior," and her flock battle evil, ecologically thoughtless foes. Fast-paced thrills spill from the pages and pull readers in, starting on page one when a suicide sniper cyborg/human aims his automatic pistol at Max as she flies in an air show over Los Angeles. To help publicize her mother's environmental group, Coalition to Stop the Madness, Max has agreed to lead the flying flock in these touring shows. Performing soon endangers her life, however, by bringing her identity and relationship with the CSM to the immediate attention of Mr. Chu, whose business has dumped radioactive material into the ocean around Hawaii. These toxins are killing millions of fish and causing grisly mutations to other sea creatures. Mr. Chu almost kills Max and then kidnaps her mother, holding her for ransom in a submarine. With the flock members' extraordinary abilities—Gazzy's inventiveness, Max's strength and intuitive "voice" in her head, and Angel's telepathy and her ability to speak to some helpful mutant sea creatures, Max rescues her mother. Patterson weaves humor into the dramatic action. In addition, Max's romantic relationship with Fang ripens to a more serious level than in the previous books. Hints of an approaching apocalypse, repeated references to Max's "mission in saving the world," and a few lingering questions such as her precarious relationship with her father all leave open the possibility of a sequel.—James K. Not great, not bad.
By F. Todd
Like a lot of other readers, I was skeptical picking up this book. The 4th book was about global warming and it was one giant political message. This book wasn't nearly as bad. There was still some global warming and pollution messages however, it's not nearly as bad. Unlike the 4th book, they had a purpose in this book. I don't want to spoil anything from the book, but this time around, the flock was working to actually save something important to them.
This book isn't perfect though. The book is focused around Max, Fang, and Angel. Some of the other characters, such as Iggy and the Gasman, were almost ignored.
Also, the flock seems to have a change in personality. Before, they were kids trying to survive, now they're brats. The flock was still sarcastic and funny, but they were mean to almost all of the adults in the book. All of the characters seemed a little off, like their personality changed between books.
There is definetly more romance in this book. I won't spoil anything. But, I can assure you that romance lovers won't be dissapointed.
Overall, it's not a bad book. Not great either. It's an improvement over the 4th Maximum Ride book. But the political message is still there. The characters seem a little different as well. But the book is still exciting and entertaining. I recommend this book to any of the Maximum Ride fans, you might want to save your money and wait for it to show up at the library.

Maximum Ride is Back on Track.
By Andrea Massaro
Picking up this book, I was skeptical. Can anyone remember the fourth book, The Final Warning, and how much we all disliked it? I was ready for another 309 pages of disappointment.

But boy, was I wrong. This book is great, and the series is one its way to redemption. The story starts out slow, and actually, the whole first 50 pages don't make sense. But later on, the plot gets fast paced and exciting, and the romance will make your heart flutter (there's a lot more of it this time around and, in my opinion, I loved it... you can guess between who!).

There are messages about global warming, but there's so small and subtle that you have to squint to see them. It actually leaves you with a feeling that, "Oh, yeah, it does exist, and I feel bad," instead of, "Stop shoving it in my face, book!"

My only complaint was this: did there seem to be some favoritism in the characters? Like, I noticed the Gasman was centralized in the story and always there, of course in addition to first-person narrator Max. So was Angel and Fang. But there seemed to be a huge limited amount of Iggy and Nudge. Maybe it was just me, and if you happen to like those four characters, great. But I am an Iggy fan, and he barely had, like, four lines.

Anyway, the ending of this book was such a cliffhanger. I can't give away much without spoiling it, but please just go and read it. I cannot absolutely wait for the next one, now that I know the series is back on track and likely won't pull a huge flop like The Final Warning. Can the next book come any sooner?

Bravo, James Patterson, Max is glad to have to back on track!

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, by Charles C. Mann

In this groundbreaking work of science, history, and archaeology, Charles C. Mann radically alters our understanding of the Americas before the arrival of Columbus in 1492.

Contrary to what so many Americans learn in school, the pre-Columbian Indians were not sparsely settled in a pristine wilderness; rather, there were huge numbers of Indians who actively molded and influenced the land around them. The astonishing Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan had running water and immaculately clean streets, and was larger than any contemporary European city. Mexican cultures created corn in a specialized breeding process that it has been called man’s first feat of genetic engineering. Indeed, Indians were not living lightly on the land but were landscaping and manipulating their world in ways that we are only now beginning to understand. Challenging and surprising, this a transformative new look at a rich and fascinating world we only thought we knew.

Amazon.com Review
1491 is not so much the story of a year, as of what that year stands for: the long-debated (and often-dismissed) question of what human civilization in the Americas was like before the Europeans crashed the party. The history books most Americans were (and still are) raised on describe the continents before Columbus as a vast, underused territory, sparsely populated by primitives whose cultures would inevitably bow before the advanced technologies of the Europeans. For decades, though, among the archaeologists, anthropologists, paleolinguists, and others whose discoveries Charles C. Mann brings together in 1491, different stories have been emerging. Among the revelations: the first Americans may not have come over the Bering land bridge around 12,000 B.C. but by boat along the Pacific coast 10 or even 20 thousand years earlier; the Americas were a far more urban, more populated, and more technologically advanced region than generally assumed; and the Indians, rather than living in static harmony with nature, radically engineered the landscape across the continents, to the point that even "timeless" natural features like the Amazon rainforest can be seen as products of human intervention.

Mann is well aware that much of the history he relates is necessarily speculative, the product of pot-shard interpretation and precise scientific measurements that often end up being radically revised in later decades. But the most compelling of his eye-opening revisionist stories are among the best-founded: the stories of early American-European contact. To many of those who were there, the earliest encounters felt more like a meeting of equals than one of natural domination. And those who came later and found an emptied landscape that seemed ripe for the taking, Mann argues convincingly, encountered not the natural and unchanging state of the native American, but the evidence of a sudden calamity: the ravages of what was likely the greatest epidemic in human history, the smallpox and other diseases introduced inadvertently by Europeans to a population without immunity, which swept through the Americas faster than the explorers who brought it, and left behind for their discovery a land that held only a shadow of the thriving cultures that it had sustained for centuries before. --Tom Nissley

From Publishers Weekly
This production is—as most nonfiction audios ought to be—a "reading" as distinct from a "performance." Johnson renders this thoroughly researched, well-written history of early North and South American Indian populations in a strong, clear voice, with excellent intonation. His diction is almost too perfect—one occasionally focuses on pronunciation rather than content. Most of the book is written in narrative form that sweeps listeners through an exciting rethinking of all we ever learned about when so-called Indians first inhabited the American continents and how they may have come here, about their numbers, religions, cultures, inventions, social structures and their relations to European invaders and settlers. When Mann relates the internecine battles among schools of anthropologists and archeologists, however, the listener might wish he had the book in hand for clarity. It might be wise from the start to make a list of the numerous Indian and European individuals and groupings. This audiobook is well worth the trouble.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Like all creation myths, the story of America’s discovery by Columbus endures no matter how improbable it now seems. Mann, a correspondent for Science and The Atlantic Monthly and coauthor of four previous books, dives right into this thorny topic—one fraught with political tension and intertwined with a nation’s identity—with no agenda other than the journalist’s desire to find the truth. Critics were riveted by his rich portrait of the pre-Columbian Americas and compared him favorably to Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fate of Human Societies. Like a good reporter, Mann seeks out sources that challenge his own views; nonetheless, critics found some of Mann’s conclusions short on evidence. In some cases, they questioned whether his journalistic approach did justice to such a complex subject.

An excellent update on the current academic understanding of pre-Columbian America
By Ursiform
Although recent years have yielded significant progress in understanding how "Indians" lived throughout the Americas before 1492 and Columbus, only isolated bits of the story have reached the popular press. Far too many people still hold to one of two myths of the Indians, or have little conception at all of pre-Columbian America.

The first popular myth is that the Indians were a bunch of primitive savages just keeping the land warm until superior Europeans showed up. It's sad to read reviews here that assert that because Indians used stone tools they were therefore "stone age", with the implication that their culture was no further advanced than that early period.

The second myth makes the Indians into proto-flower-children, naively and simply in tune with their environment.

Both myths are based on stereotyping and are condescending to the pre-Colombians. How could people spread over two continents and many millennia be briefly summarized? They can't be! The Americas saw the development of a broad range of cultures, just like every other inhabited area of the world. Some cultures overstressed their environment and soon collapsed. Others created stable conditions under which they could survive for generations. (Which is not the same as saying they didn't impact nature.) But even the latter could be brought down by climate change, political instability, disease (especially European), or contact with outsiders (Indian or European).

Great cities arose in mesoamerica and the Andes, and also in other areas when the right conditions prevailed. And sophisticated cultures existed even where city building wasn't favored.

This book takes the reader through a vibrant overview of centuries of Indian culture both before and shortly after Columbus landed. Much of the narrative is based on work-in-progress by archaeologists and historians, and will certainly become dated with time, but it is an important update to the common, current understanding of the subject.

For those not enthralled by one of the myths I mention above, most Americans recall our history along the lines of Scene 1: The Pilgrims land and encounter Indians who teach them how to grow corn; they then have a big Thanksgiving party together. Scene 2: Americans moving inland encounter savage Indians who need to be exterminated or moved to reservations to make the continent safe for manifest destiny. Scene 3: The few remaining Indians are victims of brutal European suppression, and we need to buy jewelry and pottery from them to make ourselves feel better about the situation.

This book is a welcome update to our thinking about the Americas before Columbus. It's also one of the best books I've read in long time, and I highly recommend it.

Observations about Cahokia
By Gary D. Cope
I have been a volunteer at Cahokia Mounds for about three years, leading guided tours of the Historic site. I have read extensively about Cahokia's history, attended a few conferences and had access to several of the principal archeologists at the site. I consider myself fairly well informed.

Several visitors at Cahokia, and a few of my friends, recommended that I read 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, written in 2005, by Charles C. Mann.

Mr. Mann relies heavily on the work of Dr William I. Woods, a geography professor at University of Kansas. I have found a book Envisioning Cahokia: a Landscape Perspective, co-authored by Dr. Woods. Not an easy read, but I am currently tackling it to see if I can learn more.

I have recently finished 1491 (Vintage Books, second edition, July 2011) and I have a few observations. Some of the things the author states as "facts" about Cahokia are speculation. Some of the things he says are clearly incorrect.

This makes me question the rest of the book.

The best known landmark at Cahokia is Monks Mound. Standing 100 feet high, with four terraces and a base of 14 acres, Monks Mound is the largest earthen structure in the Americas.

Mr. Mann tells us that "the elite revamped Monks Mound. By extending a low platform from one side, they created a stage for priests to perform ceremonies in full view of the public." (pg303)

The first terrace of Monks Mound is a late addition and it very well may have been used as a stage to address large gatherings in the forty acre Grand Plaza. I mention this in my tours, but point out that it is speculation. Beyond the apparent acoustics in the Grand Plaza (some archeologist have noted that, in the early mornings, it is sometimes possible to clearly hear the voices of people ascending the mound) there isn't a whole lot of evidence to support the theory.

The author tells us that one of the contributing factors to the demise of Cahokia was the diversion of Cahokia Creek. This provided additional water to the city and allowed logs to be floated downstream, but also caused flooding which destroyed the maize crop. This may well be true, but I have found no other sources that mention this diversion of Cahokia Creek. Most accounts of Cahokia's demise cite an extended drought and, perhaps, a shortened growing season.

Mound 72, in my opinion, is the most interesting mound at Cahokia. Excavations in the late 1960s by Dr. Melvin Fowler revealed about 300 burials. The most spectacular was "the beaded burial" an early chief buried on a falcon shaped blanket of 20,000 sea shell beads from the gulf of Mexico. Archeologists estimate that 60% of the burials at mound 72 were ritual killings.

Speaking of these Mr. Mann says "Among them were fifty young women who had been buried alive." (pg 298)
He may be confusing two or more separate burials.

There were about 100 young women who were likely garroted before their bodies were laid out in trenches in neat rows. I am not aware of any evidence that these victims were buried alive.
On another occasion, 50 individuals, men and women, were executed, mainly clubbed to death, and haphazardly thrown into a pit. There is evidence that some of these people were still alive when the pit was filled.

Sometime around 1150, the people at Cahokia constructed a palisade. Clearly a defensive structure, we do not know who the two mile long fence was intended to keep out.

Mr. Mann tells us that the palisade "was also intended to welcome the citizenry - anyone could freely pass through its dozen or so wide gates." (pg 303)
Actually, the "gates" into the palisade were narrow, L shaped entryways, situated between bastions, where archers easily could hold off unwanted intruders.

We are told "A catastrophic earthquake razed Cahokia in the beginning of the thirteenth century, knocking down the entire western side of Monks Mound." (pg 303)
I have a couple of problems with this statement.

The first relates to the second terrace of Monks Mound. The official literature at the Interpretative Center states that Monks Mound had four terraces. Some researchers, including Dr. Woods believes that what we now call the second terrace was the result of a massive slumpage along the western side of the mound. They may be correct, but this is still open to debate.

If Dr. Woods is correct, might the second terrace of Monks Mound be the result of an earthquake? Perhaps.

In 1811/1812, quakes along the New Madrid fault in southern Missouri caused the Mississippi River to run backwards and rang church bells in New York and Boston. Archeologists do speculate whether earthquakes had anything to do with the abandonment of Cahokia. The problem has to do with timing.

This summer I attended a Mississippian conference at Cahokia. One of the presentations dealt with this topic. There is evidence that there was a major quake along the New Madrid fault around 1450. Unfortunately this is at least 200 years too late to fit into Mr. Mann's narrative.

"The Cahokia earthquake .. must have splintered many of the city's wood-and plaster buildings; fallen torches and scattered cooking fires would have ignited the debris, burning down most surviving structures. Water from the rivers, shaken by the quake, would have sloshed into the land in a mini-tsunami. ... Meanwhile the social unrest turned violent; many houses went up in flames. There was civil war, ... fighting in the streets. The whole polity turned in on itself and tore itself apart." (pg 304)

If this scenario played out, one would expect ample archeological evidence. If it exists, I have missed it.

Finally, there are two statements in 1491 I find particularly strange.

"Monks Mound opens into a plaza a thousand feet long. In it southwest corner is a pair of mounds, one conical, one square. One day I climbed up their grassy sides at sunset." (pg 289)

You are not allowed to climb on any of the mounds except Monks Mound. There are signs posted throughout the site. Perhaps the author had special.

"A friend and I first visited Cahokia in 2002 ... The site is now a state park with a small museum." (pg 302)

Has Mr. Mann ever actually been to Cahokia? The Historic Site ceased being a state park in 1977. The "small museum" was replaced in 1989 by a 33,000 ft interpretative center that receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

An Intriguing New Look
By John D. Cofield
Charles C. Mann has taken much of what we thought we knew about the Native Americans and their world and thrown it out the window. In a pleasantly informal yet highly professional style, Mann recounts tales of his own studies and travels, as well as those of many archaeologists, historians, and anthropologists past and present throughout the Americas.

If your knowledge of the Native Americans begins and ends with what you learned in school years ago, or with the stereotypes perpetuated by Hollywood, you are in for quite a shock. To begin with, the Native Americans have been "natives" here for far longer than any one suspected. Next, their cultures were heterogeneous and quite advanced, in many ways far outdoing their counterparts in Europe. And in what may be the most controversial sections, Mann maintains that the Native Americans were neither primitive savages who left no mark on their world, nor dreamy proto-environmentalists who lived as one with nature, but rather people who throughly altered and shaped their landscapes.

This is not a book which will please many with an agenda on either the pro-development or pro-environment side, but it will be found invaluable by those who seek a better understanding of the "New World" before the Europeans "discovered" it.

My favorite. I had a copy as a young child that I poured over to figure out the humor. I wore the book out and lost it after I moved out from my family's home. Now, four decades later, it's just as delightful as I remember, concluding with "You certainly have a peculiar sense of humor."

hmm, not bad?
By mr j marshall
OK, I love Black Metal, and wanted to know more on the dark history, which is what this book promised…
BUT!!!
after my initial excitement at the size of the book and sprinklings of photos and embellishments, there's not much actual info on the history and development of the music. I'm guessing this book was written at least 15yrs ago, and written to cash in on the interest of the scene, and bring the fuss to america, and make some money.
There's too many 'introductions' and amendments, re-edition notes and thankyous etc… Yawn, Just get on with the book please!
It's very repetitive, with a lot of flowery nonsense. The author must like sounding clever. Very quickly it dissolves into a load of mumbo jumbo about boring pretty unrelated pagan/satanic theories (sounds interesting, but it's not) Yes I wanted to know fresh insights on all the carnage, but also about the music developments etc. It doesn't even touch on the music!? 1/3 of the book seemed to be just Varg ranting on about UFOs etc!
These days, there is a ton more info on wiki about the early murders, suicides and church burnings, and written more to the point
My advice: Wiki up Black Metal, and read all the related stuff about Mayhem etc. Then watch real interviews etc on youtube
If you want crazy B/W obscure photos of corpse painted instigators and interviews, I suggest getting the AWESOME book Metallion diaries, that dude was actually there!
This book could have been SO much better, too much hype, they needed a strict editor, and I WISH they'd asked ME to design it! a bit messy. HAIL SATAN!!

Extreme Metal, Extreme Detail
By A. Tidwell
Four stars for the amazingly deep, detailed coverage of a sub-culture subject. The first few sections of the book tell the story well, the latter parts pile on detail that at times is more than you'll ever want to know or take the time to read. As an extreme metal fan, I appreciated it but admittedly skimmed through the late sections on UFOs and Norwegian National Socialist policy. There are some interviews in here that you wouldn't get anywhere else.

Like driving by a horrible car accident.....
By Sealed Fate
....You just cant look away. This is indeed an extremely well written account of the books subject matter.Being someone that was there for the first releases of the Metal genre known as "Black Metal" (Venom,Bathory,Sodom,etc..), it was shocking to read this & see how vastly different people may perceive the same exact thing: what I always took as a borderline "joke",references to Satanism & the Devil as an expression of rebellion (ohhh, scare the parents & authority figures!!) or perhaps an appreciation for horror movies (that was my take as a teenager),these misguided kids from the other side of the world took as a soberingly literal treatise on giving oneself over to evil. And even more disturbing than that is how it morphed into a branch of neo-nazism(?) A fascinating sociological read not for the faint of heart.

From Booklist
This entry in Molay’s Paris Homicide series won France’s prestigious crime-fiction award, the Prix du Quai des Orfèvres. Its hero is Nico Sirsky, head of the Paris Criminal Investigation Division, known as “La Brigade Criminelle,” or “La Crim’.” Sirsky is an endearing mixture of tortured, hardheaded cop and romantic; he falls instantly in love with an internist he visits for a suspected ulcer, valiantly flirting throughout his examination. Sirsky, the forensics team, and a seemingly ever-present criminal profiler confront the grisly murder of a young, pregnant assistant history professor at the Sorbonne, killed in her home during the day. This is followed by more murders of thirtysomething, upscale women, all of whom opened their doors to the killer, who has an agenda: he left a note at one of the early crime scenes, announcing his intention to kill seven women in seven days. He also tightens the noose around Sirsky’s neck, threatening and stalking those closest to him. Molay uses meticulous police procedure and forensics to bolster gripping scenes of terror. Let’s hope more installments from this series cross the ocean soon. --Connie Fletcher

Review
Reviews: "Author Fredrique Molay does a superb job of building the suspense in overt and subtle ways; don't pick this book up unless you're planning to read for a while because, I assure you, you won't be able to put it down. - CriminalElement.com: Fresh Meat "...a slick, highly realistic, and impeccably crafted thriller. Likeable characters, outstanding pacing, and unexpected plot twists that keep readers guessing throughout…an extraordinary, hard-hitting novel. ForeWord Reviews "Author Frederique Molay writes very well, and occasionally there is a touch of horror and a layer of suspense throughout; the plot manages to take you to interesting places. And overall, it was an enjoyable book to read. I commend Anne Trager's translation of the book; it was really quite well-done, and the editing and formatting for the [e-book] was also well done." - Above the Law: At the Scene of the Crime Praise for Frederique Molay: "Molay uses meticulous police procedure and forensics to bolster gripping scenes of terror. Let’s hope more installments from this series cross the ocean soon." - Booklist "Frederique Molay is the French Michael Connelly. - Jean Miot, journalist, former editorial director for the French daily Le Figaro and former president of Agence France Press "The 7th Woman is a taut and terror-filled thriller. Frederique Molay navigates French police procedure with a deft touch, creating a lightning-quick, sinister plot with twists and turns that kept me reading late and guessing to the very end. Inspector Nico Sirsky is every bit as engaging and dogged as Arkady Renko in Gorky Park and is sure to become a favorite with readers in the United States and around the world." - New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni "The 7th Woman blends suspense and authentic police procedure with a parallel tale of redemption. Well-drawn characters and ratcheting tension won't let you put the book down. I read this in one sitting." - Paris mystery writer Cara Black "It is a handsomely written and wonderfully translated Parisian police procedural that also will prowl your mind. The ugly parts are appalling, but Molay has the prowess to touch lightly upon them before exploring the horror seeping into the hardened police ranks." - Durango Herald "A remarkable plot that races forward and focuses on likeable characters. An unequivocal success. - Action Francaise "It's really an excellent book. It's the kind of suspense that makes you miss your subway stop or make you turn off you phone once you've started it, and we are hoping that Frederique Molay writes many more like it. - RTL "An excellent crime novel that you read in one sitting. - L'Express/Lire "Skillful suspense." - Lire "You barely have time to catch your breath between turning the pages of this spine-tingling novel." - Cine Tele Revue

The 7th Woman
By Cphe
I don't give many books 5 stars unless they are exceptional to me. This book is well worth the rating. It is the best mystery/police procedural I have read in quite some time.

Nico Sirsky is head of the Paris Criminal Investigative Unit. He is young for the post but is exceptionally brilliant for the job. There are a series of deadly and gruesome murders that take place in Paris and Nico is taunted relentlessly by the perpetrator. Nico and his team have to race against the clock to find a killer that leaves very little clue for the team to go on. The killer is targeting women closer and closer to Nico and appears to have a lot of inside information.

The series of murders are presented graphically by the author and the writing and story is presented in a tautly, intricate manner. The use of forensics (think C.S.I) is well written and believable. There are many red herrings in this story which added to the complexity of the story.

If you enjoy police procedural/mystery stories then this book is well worth a look at. I found it time and money well spent.

Another great read from Le French Book
By Bellaire11
One of the great things about reading mysteries and thrillers that take place outside of the USA and are written by local authors is that they often give the reader not only a great read but also teach us about another culture or justice system. We have always had a number of Italian authors in this category. We have not had nearly as many French authors, although the prolific Belgian author Georges Simenon certainly contributed significantly to the genre. Into this breach Le French Book, a small publisher intent on bringing out successful French mysteries and thrillers in translation in e book form, is a welcome addition. To date they have released 3 books. All of them excellent and all of them different. For those interested - the others are Treachery in Bordeaux - which is a nice "cozy" mystery that also informs us quite a bit about the wine industry, and The Paris Lawyer, a great story about a young woman lawyer who takes on a case in the French countryside which evoques in her memory past events of signifiant importance.

In this book we are treated to a classical police procedural. The story is gripping (a gripping story is one that I stay up too late reading), a bit gory - as others have mentioned - and educational as to the workings of the Paris police. Like most good detective stories false leads and possible suspects abound. Patience and good police work win out, but at a significant cost.

Although translated from the French, all three of the books are highly readable. I hope that we will see more like these in the near future.

A fast page turner
By zapper
My first read about Nico Sirsky and the French Police. A little far fetched plot is made readable by good writing (although) translated), but it kept me enthralled and turning pages faster then normal. Molay gives the reader Paris, its people and its police in a new light. I want more from Molay.
