Schiffer Publishing sent this book along for review in August 2015 and I am barely catching up in publishing a review. Keep in mind that everyday another generation comes along and what may be common knowledge to most Bigfooters might be an eye opener for those not familiar with all things Bigfoot. So much of what is printed in this book is old news to me but to the up and comers, it may well be brand new information.

Seeking Bigfoot, by far Newton’s finest work on the topic, “chronicles the twenty-first-century North American search for ‘Big Hairy Monsters’ —BHMs — variously known as Bigfoot, Sasquatch…"

The author covers certain reports that stand out from various states and in the California section I’m very pleased he covered one from 2012 in which I interviewed the witness by way of a videotape in San Francisco in the summer of 2013. The witness posted his report to the BFRO website and does not want his name used in conjunction with his report. If I were to guess what this hunter sighted on September 23, 2012 west of Markleeville, California my answer would be Bigfoot.

The male hunter, like many before him, told me in no uncertain terms that prior to his sighting his impression of the subject was “Bigfoot” was always just a big joke, somewhat akin to Santa Claus. When he had his sighting, all doubt and joking was cast aside.
What troubles me is the skeptics and doubters will not go out of their way to interview witnesses in person, instead usually opting out for higher ground: it was a mistaken identity or the witness had lied about what they saw. That is not investigation or research yet these same people call themselves by such august titles as “a dedicated researcher.”
The author does a highly commendable job in covering reports in the United States and rather than review too much, it is nice to take a closer look at the data of which he writes.
Let’s look at the speed of the subject noted by the witnesses: “at a speed so fast that at first they couldn’t imagine what it would be.” (Colorado). “…faster than a human, maybe about as fast as a deer can run,” (Mississippi).
And what about the head? “Its head was long and cone shaped.” (Iowa). “Slightly pointed cone shaped head.” (Missouri). “…the creature’s head ‘didn’t look human,” “a little raised in the back and sloping toward the forehead.” (Mississippi).

The author covers some of the major researchers including myself with a nice color picture of the December 2011 Bigfoot Times.
There is a substantial section on websites. I have high praise for this book as it has so many resources as jump off points for further research. There are some minor mistakes, of course. The man pictured next to Albert Ostman on page 15 is René Dahinden, not John Green. If you want a good introduction to the subject matter and some insight as to who is investigating and researching the subject today, there is a good section on that as well. Want to know about some of the movies that have been released on the topic. Well, this book covers those as well.

Seeking Bigfoot is great value for the money and this release is in hardback. Do yourself a favor, buy this book. It is money well spent. As for myself, I have researched this topic for numerous decades and I would like to think I might have an opinion worth listening to. Cheers.

Good but re-hash of information of what Bigfooters already know.

This book will not officially be released until September 28, but is available here on Amazon in hardback in limited quantities. The information is largely re-hashed of what we already know about the subject, but the author does something different-he lists different researchers/bloggers/scientists and skeptics, as well as listing websites to go to online. He also lists movies, documentaries and TV shows such as Finding Bigfoot, Destination Truth and Mountain Monsters. Even with re-hashed information for us in the Bigfoot field, this is obviously a primer for the uninitiated and gets a rating of 8 1/2 out of 10 stars. I do highly recommend it.

I just picked this up after reading a glowing review in Library Journal (included below) and have been positively captivated by the book. It is engaging, revealing, and absolutely essential!

Library Journal review: DeVito, coauthor of the award-winning discography/chronology/commentary The John Coltrane Reference, expands upon his previous work with this fascinating and important compendium of the jazz icon's own words. He comprehensively compiles all the known interviews of Coltrane, some familiar and others previously unpublished or published only in French, Japanese, or British journals. He also includes articles and liner notes that quote the tenor sax giant extensively, a few of Coltrane's personal writings, and reminiscences from a childhood friend. He arranges the material in chronological order, allowing readers to see clearly the evolution of Coltrane's music from his chordal sheets of sound to his modal period to his free explorations. Through these gripping and revealing interviews, Coltrane comes alive as a serious, compulsive innovator who desperately wanted to communicate his philosophical underpinnings and feelings to his audience. Though many solid books have been written about Coltrane - from J.C. Thomas's Chasin' The Trane (Da Capo Paperback) (1975) to Ben Ratliff's recent Coltrane: The Story of a Sound - this compilation of source materials provides an intimate view of the man and his music. COLTRANE'S INTELLECT AND POWER ARE FOUND IN THESE INTERVIEWS

5 page Preface, 1 page Prelude (which is a very important statement), 369 pages of interviews (including 33 pages of Appendices with two interviews with a boyhood friend and music teacher of Coltrane's), 5 pages of Credits, and a 15 page index. There's a few b&w photographs throughout the book. The author, Chris DeVito, is the lead author of THE JOHN COLTRANE REFERENCE, which was the BBC jazz book of the year in 2008.

This wonderful book, as the title suggests, contains interviews with John Coltrane, one of the most important musician/composers in, not only jazz, but music itself. And not just a few interviews, or several cherry-picked articles-but virtually every known interview Coltrane gave. Some are published as they originally appeared, some are new transcriptions, and importantly, some are previously unpublished. The one negative point is the 1961 interview by Ralph J. Gleason. Due to other factors this piece had to be heavily edited, which is a shame. Gleason's knowledge of jazz and his probing questions make for a great interview, especially with someone as thoughtful in his answers as Coltrane.

Beginning in 1952, after a concert, Coltrane and his drummer, Specs Wright, sat down for the first interview that was in conjunction with a two page report on the concert, in THE BALTIMORE AFRO-AMERICAN paper. The interviews conclude in 1966, with a Nat Hentoff interview for the liner notes for the album "Kulu Se Mama", released in 1967. Also included is a section entitled "Quotable Coltrane", which includes short pieces by/about Coltrane from/to various musicians(Thelonious Monk, Sunny Murray) and others (Ralph J. Gleason,Nat Hentoff, LeRoi Jenkins, and others), and 'Tranes "three wishes" from the great jazz book "Three Wishes: An Intimate Look at Jazz Greats".

The interviews themselves, obviously by different writers, are of sometimes varying quality. However, even the slightly lesser interviews have useful, interesting information, that help bring a larger picture of Coltrane into sharper focus. Taken as a whole, these articles are about as close to something approaching a Coltrane autobiography that we'll ever see.

In these interviews (some lengthy) Coltrane expounds on his approach to music, and his unending quest to find his own voice through music. His thoughtful answers to questions are full of insight into both his music and the inner workings of a man known for his off-stage gentleness-which, at times, could be the extreme opposite of his music. With the inclusion of a "Blindfold Test" conducted by Leonard Feather, correspondence to both fans (including an inquiry about job opportunities in Ghana), journalists, and liner notes from several albums, this is a full, rich picture of Coltrane.

For anyone who has been captivated by the music-the sound, the combination of both gentleness and fury found in his playing-this is a book worth having in your library. Having these interviews in one volume, where the impact of Coltrane's thoughts and ideas is much greater than a single interview, is well worthwhile. No matter if you've read several interviews, or one or two, the total weight of Coltrane's responses to probing questions are brought together in an easy to read, chronological order. His influences are still being felt today-find out why in this book.

Coltrane on Coltrane consists of more than 50 interviews and articles. this is not a novel in the sense of a good guy, bad guy unless one thinks of drugs as the bad guy. fortunately, this collection is longer on music than drugs. John Coltrane was one of the most important figures in aframerican music. he experienced extreme and ignorant criticism from "jazz" writers. as a musician once said, that's what their job is to criticize and i could add categorize. some of these critics and biographers take an attitude superior to the artist or ego trip one might say. most accept that music is a language with notes, chords, melodies and rhythm like language has letters, words, sentences and phrases. aframerican speech has rhythm, and this can be heard most distinctly in the west african languages. although the difference between speech patterns among different american groups has become less distinct, it was often easy to distinguish aframerican from euroamerican or even asianamerican speech. this is reflected in the voices of the music; this idea is mostly rejected by the critics who are outsiders even though they might know the language, it's still babble or sheets of sound. supposedly, coined by ernest hemingway, sheets of sound is a reflection of not understanding the language. even musicians can't always connect, because of bias against new ideas or the threat of the way they are playing becoming obsolete. as saxophonist bill wiggins said, "maybe you can't hear it." this is the dilemma of the critic, he might not hear it because of ignorance or preconceived ideas. we all know that people can't repeat what they were told, so in a sense they didn't really hear it. it's interesting that the loss of individuality so highly sought by the ancestors has been lost parallel to the loss of characteristic speech patterns. the value of this book is that mr coltrane describes what he is doing and reveals that he is not speaking in tongues. nevertheless, the emotional impact is the same for mr coltrane was schooled in the tradition as well as the theory of music. this is why mr coltrane speaks of the central role of the spirit. and like most aframerican music, it cannot be transcribed in the western system. mr coltrane or trane was a very humble musician as noted by harold mabern and others. he was also very open and defended nontraditional musicians like albert ayler, ornette coleman and eric dolphy. i recommend the book whole heartedly. it's long, but not for lovers of mr coltrane.

I would require all students interested in construction as a professional read this. before they start any classes : say read blue prints now.when I was an entry level construction inspector I had the good fortune to run into a super superintendent who ordered me to read the prints this is an absolute for any person

I'm using this book as the text resource for an introductory level course in Construction Management at a four-year accredited program in the Southeast. The students are responding favorably to the conversational style of the writing and the level of content in terms of depth. The book works equally well for both my more experienced students and the ones who are just getting their feet wet in the career field. If you're looking for a great overview book on the construction industry this is a definite buy; if however you are looking for great depth on any one particular area of construction management you should probably look elsewhere.

About the Author
Yu-kai Chou is an Author and International Keynote Speaker on Gamification. He is the Original Creator of the gamification framework: Octalysis, and the author of Actionable Gamification: Beyond Points, Badges, and Leaderboards. This book is probably the most important and well researched guide to Gamification that is on the market today. If you think Gamification is about gaming stuff them you are dead wrong. It's about how your brain works and is motivated.

I interviewed Yu-kai for the Business Book Talk Podcast and his understanding and depth of knowledge kept me on the edge of my studio seat for over 45 minutes. This is probably one of the best values on Amazon today if you are a business manager, marketing expert or entrepreneur. I can't wait for his next book.

Fantastic manual.

I don't normally write reviews, but I bought this book and I absolutely adore it.

I am an educator who wanted to try to revitalize his classroom. I had bought a few books about gamification, and "Actionable Gamification" stood out fast and far. The other books I got were vague and not helpful. Chou's book gives evidence, cites sources, and lists tangible ways to gamify any project you might be working on. It reads like a how-to manual, rather than some worthlessly optimistic, airy theoretical text.

Chou begins by explaining that there are 8 useful motivating forces, or reasons anyone does anything at all; which Chou calls "Core Drives." Each chapter after this point focuses specifically on one of these forces, how you can use them to your advantage in your projects, and how, if abused, they can be a detriment to your project. He then lists several techniques for that core drive, wraps up the chapter with a thought exercise and a tie in to his website, and moves on to the next core drive.

The book is incredibly easy to understand, well paced, and fun to read. I am excited to use what I learned in this book to go make lesson plans. :)

The best money I've spent all year so far

I'm still not even all the way through but I've gained so, so much from this book. Yu-kai Chou is the absolute EXPERT on this topic and also has led an interesting life in general. His passion for gamification and how real people can use it emanates from every page, and the Octalysis framework is possibly the most interesting and detailed system I've ever read about, on any topic, ever. (And I studied physics, computer science, and business in college!)

As a marketer, copywriter, and storyteller who has basically "heard it all" in terms of psychological triggers, this book continues to astound me and help me level up (pun intended) my mastery of so many functions of my daily work—creating, selling, publishing, and more. Highly recommended.

Extraordinary pictures light up this tribute to Galileo, telling the story of his discoveries, rise to prominence and excoriation by the Church. Sis (Follow the Dream), an experienced and sophisticated chronicler of history's visionaries, outdoes himself with his illustrations. Detailed and delicate, ingeniously conceived, his paintings convey abstractions with an immediate impact. The artist expresses the simultaneous wonder and prevision of Galileo's celestial observations, for example, in a luminous multipaneled composition: in the center, Galileo trains his telescope on the moon; surrounding panels replicate Galileo's notes about and sketches of the lunar surface. Other paintings take inspiration from contemporaneous maps and treatises; still others borrow historical imagery to convey the loneliness of the censored scientist. Handwritten passages from Galileo's own works embellish the pages and supply information missing from the text. Even with the powerful art, however, this volume does not open up Galileo's story to the uninitiated: the brief text oversimplifies the issues, even for a picture book, and seems to presume the reader's awareness of the historical significance of Galileo's struggles. While the book's usefulness may be limited, its strengths are not: it is a book with deep if not broad appeal. Ages 6-up.

Grade 1-6?In Follow the Dream (Knopf, 1991), Sis depicted both the humanity and heroism of Christopher Columbus. In Starry Messenger, Sis turns his considerable talents to another infamous Italian?Galileo Galilei. He layers his telling so that young children or groups may focus on the short version printed in large type at the bottom of each page. Older readers will glean more from the quotes pulled from the astronomer's treatise (the work that inspired this title) and other primary sources, such as Inquisition documents. This second layer is printed in script and presented in a variety of decorative patterns (suggesting ideograms) to distinguish it. The sophisticated details of Sis's watercolor, pen, and rubber-stamp illustrations provide yet another dimension as well as ambiance. A master of symbol, the artist creates scenes that focus on the subject?"a boy born with stars in his eyes"?and shows how he shines against the darker aspects of his time. The aging scientist stands alone in a circle of yellow light, suggesting his identification with the heliocentrism for which he was being condemned, surrounded by a sea of red-clad Cardinals. The text is no less powerful: "He was tried in the Pope's court, and everyone could see that the stars had left his eyes." The pathos, the painstaking copies of Galileo's famous sketches of the heavens, and the attention to current scholarship make this book a fascinating find. Badly Bound but otherwise Good

I returned the first copy because text and pictures were bound into the spline of the book. Second copy exactly the same. How could it win a Caldecott prize if it's so poorly bound?! However the pictures and text are beautifully done and we'll just have to forget trying to read/see the parts that are bound into the cover. (not a serious complaint, but annoying nonetheless.)

Enlightening

I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to teach my child about the importance of Galileo's findings and challenging the status quo and I think this book does demonstrate this very well. The dialog is not too overwhelming and so my child doesn't loose attention. The pictures are pretty interesting and have a lot of detail. I try to turn that into a game by finding stuff. The message is clear though so I am pretty pleased. There are a couple parts I tend to skip or adjust but it doesn't hurt the overall message.
