Great Book!

My 9 year old grandson loved this book. I read to him nightly over the phone since we live in different states, and he chose the book. I love the Who Was books, and have never been disappointed. This one gave a lot of insight into Davy Crockett's life that I did not know about. I like learning along with him!

This was for my 12 year old nephew, and he did a book report from it. He enjoyed the book a lot, and asked me for more books like it! This was his first book about a historical "hero" and was definitely a good read for him.

A tutorial on the tools used throughout the book accompanies this introduction. The mathematics behind the tools is left to the appendices. Part Two provides a graphical survey of the classical areas of acoustics that pertain to musical instruments: vibrating strings, bars, membranes, and plates. Part Three is devoted almost exclusively to the piano. Several two- and three-dimensional graphical tools are introduced to study various characteristics of pianos: individual notes and interactions among them, the missing fundamental, inharmonicity, tuning visualization, the different distribution of harmonic power for the various zones of the piano keyboard, and potential uses for quality control. These techniques are also briefly applied to other musical instruments studied in earlier parts of the book.

For physicists and engineers there are appendices to cover the mathematics lurking beneath the numerous graphs and a brief introduction to MatlabRG which was used to generate these graphs. A website accompanying the book (https://sites.google.com/site/analysisofsoundsandvibrations/) contains:

About the Author

David M. Koenig, Engineering Associate (Retired), Corning, Inc.

David M. Koenig was born in Columbus, Ohio and lived in the nearby town of Grove City until age 17. He attended Bates College and the University of Chicago where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry. After obtaining a M.S. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Connecticut he received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University. He worked at Corning, Inc. for 27 years in the area of process control and analysis and wrote a book on that subject in 1991. After retirement he wrote a book on process control and then got interested in applying the analysis tools to the piano which led to this book.

Delwin D. Fandrich is Piano Research, Design and Manufacturing Consultant at Fandrich Piano Company.

Great book for those interested in the science and mathematics ...

Great book for those interested in the science and mathematics of piano (and sounds in general). Suitable for those with a moderate background and particularly of use to those who have done at least some signal processing and need some basic facts about the harmonic features of a piano. I am not a piano technician but believe that many would find this of interest.

My only complaint is that the Kindle version of this book looks very nice but is unusable due to the EXTREMELY SLOW speed to render a page. Sometimes it takes a minute for the next or previous page to draw and other times it seems to get permanently stuck. The content, when eventually rendered, looks very sharp so the issue is not with the original content but with post-processing or perhaps a buggy download or caching algorithm. Given the order in which pages are displayed, I believe the PDF is either not loaded (ridiculous since it's not really that big and I have an iPad Pro) or that the caching algorithm is off rendering pages it thinks I will look at instead or prioritizing the page I am actually on. I have seen this problem with other eTextbook that are rich in graphics (as opposed to fiction ebooks).

This publication from well-known motoring artist Tony Gardiner is written for those who would like to start drawing or improve their skills. It details the basic essentials of light, reflections and scale, and demonstrates the way a car’s perspective in a three-quarter front view recedes slightly towards the rear. He also discusses specialized topics including suspension angles, grilles, lamps, and choosing ink, pencil or paint. I admired the renditions of the rally BMC Mini, and the multiple views of the D50 Lancia/Ferrari may inspire you to pull out pencil and paper for some sketching of your own.

Chapters on perspective, reflections and cutaways are excellent, but a section on computer tools would have been relevant.

About the Author
Tony Gardiner studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the West Sussex College of Art & Crafts in Worthing, during the late 1950’s. It was during this period his love of the motor car came to the fore, spurred on by the famous victory of the Ecurie Ecosse team of Jaguar D Types winning at Le Mans in 1957. This became clear when his progress report for 1957/58, stated “has a weakness for converting all his compositions into motoring or other mechanical illustrations, this must be curbed”. On leaving college he worked as an illustrator in the aviation industry, then to freelancing for various car magazines and then into the auto industry. Now specializing in illustrations in motoring publications and for private commissions for the likes of Rover Japan, Vauxhall, Motorsport, Pegueot, plus drivers such as Sir Stirling Moss and Derek Bell. Tony Gardiner’s work has graced the covers and pages of many motoring books and magazines. He is also an author in his own right, having published ‘Motor Racing at Goodwood in the Sixties’, ‘The Brighton National Speed Trials’ and ‘RAC Rally Action’, all of which are personal recollections of the famous motoring events.

Finding gold "on the other side of complexity"

I have read most of John Maxwell's previous books and reviewed several of them. In recent years, it seemed to me that he was recycling many of the same ideas, albeit finding new applications for them. In this volume, he offers his perspectives on "years of living in a leadership environment and learning through trial and error what it means to be a leader. The lessons I've learned are personal and often simple, yet they can have a profound impact. I have spent my entire life mining them. I think of each chapter as a gold nugget. In the hands of the right person, they can add tremendous value to their leadership." He hastens to point out that he is still learning, that many others have made significant contributions to this book, that what he learned can also be learned by nearly anyone else, that much of what he shares is the result of leadership mistakes he has made over a period of 40+ years, and that the value of the material will depend almost entirely on the extent to which she or he effectively applies the lessons learned.

In my opinion, this is Maxwell's most valuable book thus far because it combines the strengths of a vivid memory, a keen mind, a caring temperament, unadorned eloquence, and a sincere desire to help enrich the lives of others. He carefully organizes his material within 26 chapters. In each, he focuses on a "golden nugget" of insight. When concluding, he suggests that the danger of a book like this "is that it is easy to breeze through it, understanding the concepts that are contained in it but not actually [begin italics] doing [end italics] anything with them." In this context, I am reminded of Thomas Edison's suggestion that "vision without execution is hallucination."

I especially appreciate Maxwell's skilful use of two sections that provide "Application Exercises" to complete a self-audit on the key points in each chapter and a "Mentoring Moment" that suggests how to share with others (e.g. direct reports) the lessons learned so that they can also benefit from them. Hopefully, this will help them, in turn, to help others to benefit from "the leadership gold." He also clusters sequences of key points highlighted with bold face. I also appreciate Maxwell's strategic use of dozens of relevant aphorisms from various sources, located in the margins of each chapter. For example:

To a much greater extent than in any of his more than 40 other books, Maxwell trains his reader to master the Socratic method (i.e. rigorous, relentless interrogation) by using that method when presenting the "leadership gold" he has mined throughout his life and career thus far. Extending the metaphor, he helps his reader to recognize the "fool's gold" that so many so-called leaders cherish: announce rather than inquire, intimidate rather than encourage, threaten rather than nourish, ridicule weakness rather than recognize strength, etc. These people tend to be what Jean Lipman-Blumen characterizes as "toxic leaders, destructive bosses, and corrupt politicians."

I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing for or who is only recently embarked on a career that could lead to leadership responsibilities. Also, to those who now have such responsibilities and recognize the need to increase their effectiveness as well as the effectiveness of those entrusted to their care. (One of the "toxic" leader's least attractive qualities among many is her or his absolute certainty that there is nothing more to learn.) Those such as I who have already read several of Maxwell's other books will find much that is familiar in this volume. In fact, there are no head-snapping revelations, nor does Maxwell make any such claim. I do not damn with faint praise when suggesting that he presents the "lessons learned from a lifetime of leading" with simplicity. On the contrary that's a compliment. Oliver Wendell Holmes once asserted, "I would not give a fig for simplicity on this side of complexity but I would give anything for simplicity on the other side of complexity." So would John Maxwell as he continues to learn, to teach, and to lead.

GREAT MANUAL BUT NOTHING NEW

As a Maxwell follower for years I can tell you that the content of this book keeps with his tradition of simplicity, practicality, and solid principles. From that end of it, it is Maxwell all the way. However, it is important for readers to know that this book really contains nothing "new". This is rather a compilation of his many books and lectures compressed into a manual he calls "GOLD". Its a great book to teach from, but if youre looking for something "NEW" from John, this is not a book to offer you that. This is just John marketed in yet another way.

About the Author
Eric Chiang received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and his Masters and Doctorate in Economics at the University of Florida. His first academic position was at New Mexico State University. Currently, Eric is Associate Professor and Graduate Director in the Economics Department at Florida Atlantic University. Eric also serves as the Director of Instructional Technology for the College of Business.

In 2009, Eric was recipient of FAU’s highest teaching award, the Distinguished Teacher of the Year. He received the Stewart Distinguished Professorship awarded by the College of Business among numerous other teaching awards. He has published 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals on a range of subjects including technology spillovers, intellectual property rights, telecommunications, and health care. His research has appeared in leading journals including the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Technology Transfer, and the Southern Economic Journal. He has presented at major conferences including the AEA Conference on Teaching, EEA, WEAI, SEA, and NBER meetings, as well as at universities across the country and world.

As an instructor who teaches both face-to-face and online courses, Eric uses a variety of technological tools including clickers, text-response systems, and homework management systems to complement his active learning style lectures. As an administrator in the College of Business, Eric’s role as Director of Instructional Technology involves assisting instructors with effectively implementing classroom technologies. In this position, Eric also ensures that the quality of online courses meets accreditation standards including those set by AACSB.

In addition to his dedication to teaching economic principles and his administrative duties, Eric devotes time to new research in economic education. His current research agenda focuses on the effects of online versus face-to-face courses and the power of visual learning. The third edition of CoreEconomics embodies Eric’s devotion to economic education and the benefits from adapting to the new, often creative ways in which students learn and instructors teach.

In his spare time, Eric enjoys studying cultures and languages, and travels frequently, even if only for a brief stay to keep costs low. He has visited all 50 U.S. states and over 70 countries, and enjoys long jogs and walks when he travels in order to experience local life to the fullest.

Excellent Customer Service

Originally when I ordered the book from this company, after two weeks I had not received it. So I emailed the company stating that I had not received the book. The following day I received an email stating that their records showed that the book had been shipped out but that they would refund my money anyway. The book was cheap, only $3.99 I believe so it wasn't about the money but I had been inconvenienced a little by not having the book by the time school started. But, the fast reply to my inquiry, and the fact that they refunded me my money so fast even though the delay in shipping wasn't there fault is what made me give such a high review for this product. Two weeks after sending and receiving the emails I finally got my book in the mail in the condition that was described. I would definitely do business with this company in the future.

Perfect condition

The product was received in perfect condition. It was a lot cheaper than purchasing new. It was not marked up at all. The only thing that I was not too pleased about was that it took a long time to reach me. It did fall within the time specified but it just happened to be at the latest date given.

Moderately helpful

This Schaum's outline is OK if you have an engineer's interest in the subject, but it does not have the kinds of problems you typically encounter in the pure sciences. It is also not typical of the high quality you find in other Schaum's outlines.
In Lagrangian mechanics, the trajectory of an object is derived by finding the path which minimizes the action, a quantity which is the integral of the Lagrangian over time. The Lagrangian for classical mechanics is taken to be the difference between the kinetic energy and the potential energy.
This considerably simplifies many physical problems. For example, consider a bead on a hoop. If one were to calculate the motion of the bead using Newtonian mechanics, one would have a complicated set of equations which would take into account the forces that the hoop exerts on the bead at each moment. The same problem using Lagrangian mechanics is much simpler. One looks at all the possible motions that the bead could take on the hoop and mathematically finds the one which minimizes the action. There are fewer equations since one is not directly calculating the influence of the hoop on the bead at a given moment.
I don't think that this Schaum' outline does a good job of showing the difference in approach to these kinds of problems. Instead Newtonian and Lagrangian approaches to problems are all jumbled up together. Instead, I recommend that you type "Lagrangian Dynamics" into Google and look at some of the excellent sets of lecture notes available on-line. The online tutorial "A Crash Course in Lagrangian Dynamics" is particularly helpful. At only 18 pages it gets to the heart of the matter and contains some solved numerical examples.
As an aside, if you use Amazon's "search inside" function for this book you will be completely confused. The table of contents and "excerpt" shown are for this book. However, the "Surprise Me" sections are from "Schaum's Outline of Mathematica". If the student of Lagrangian dynamics electronically "thumbs" through this book and wonders what creating 3D graphics with Mathematica has to do with Lagrangian dynamics, the answer is "nothing" - this is an editing error courtesy of Amazon.

The best on Lagrangian Mechanics

If you would like to understand and know who to use Lagrange equation, look no further. This book provides both theory and practical application to Lagrange equation. The material converge is excellent and complete. The book is rich in examples and solved problem. It is a graduate level book but also very accessible to people with good background in Dynamics. I often refer to it when solving dynamic modeling of systems.

The Very Best

This is the best of Schaum's Outlines. Not only is the treatment of variational mechanics complete, with exposition on every major aspect of the derivation and solution dynamical equations, it does so while exceeding all junior-level texts on analytical mechanics. Its treatment of dissipation functions in chapter six, moreover, is better than the available graduate textbooks on the subject. This is the one workbook in the series that you must own for learning and for future reference.

About the Author

Dawn Apgar, PhD, LSW, ACSW, has helped thousands of social workers across the country pass the examinations associated with all levels of licensure. In recent years, she has consulted in numerous states to assist with establishing licensure test preparation programs, including training the instructors.

Dr. Apgar has done research on licensure funded by the American Foundation for Research and Consumer Education in Social Work Regulation and is currently chairperson of her state's social work licensing board. She is a past President of the New Jersey Chapter of NASW and has been on its National Board of Directors. In 2014, the Chapter presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Apgar has taught in both undergraduate and graduate social work programs and has extensive direct practice, policy, and management experience in the field.

This is a great study guide. It was the only one I used and between studying with this guide and reading through the DSM, I passed the ASWB Clinical exam with flying colors 16 years after I finished my MSW. I highly recommend it. If you follow her tips, and use the guide as an indicator of what you know and what you need to know a little bit better you will do well.

Passed the LCSW!

Passed the LCSW the first try! I graduated with my MSW in 2008 and knew I had a lot of reviewing to do. i know this book helped me get all the reviewing that I needed. I read it twice, had a really good DSM 5 Power Point, and used a LCSW App (Pocket Prep purchased). I think the test was really hard. I thought it would be more detail about theories but not the test I got...was mostly ethical questions. What would you do first...apply Maslow and the EatPie (in book) to most questions. Very clinical...dah. I studied for 4 months to build my confidence. This book has so many benefits. Test anxiety, getting things in order in your mind, ways to study and test, and the practice test. What I liked about the practice test was not so much that the questions asked would be on the test but each question made me think and go back and study that specific topic. I was surprised how well I did on the test. The App, I mentioned above was super hard so I was even more prepared..probably overly. I agree with others that reviewed this book, the mile wide and 1 inch deep knowledge is the way to think about your studying for the LCSW. Remember safety first on a lot of questions. Very logical and book smart is what you need to get use to for the test. Good luck and I'm sure you will do great. I am so releaved I passed!

Introduction

We, the authors of this book, believe a recovery program should be made up of meditation, prayer, and action. This book will try to help readers in each of these areas.

On each page you'll find three sections. The first section will be a quote followed by a few paragraphs on the spiritual message we have found within the quote. We suggest reading the quote and our thoughts on it; then take a few minutes and reflect on your own spiritual journey. How does this quote and our thoughts on the quote speak to your recovery program? Is your program where you want it to be? If so, take pride. If not, think about which of the Twelve Steps you need to work, and what action needs to be taken. We are firm believers that the Steps plus action will solve most problems.

Next on the page, you'll find a Prayer for the Day. We see prayer as an important action. Prayer is an act of reaching outside of yourself. Prayer is an act of asking for help in the task of being human. We suggest reading the Prayer for the Day, and if it fits for you, repeat it throughout the day. If it doesn't, take a few moments and come up with a personal prayer that fits for you. If none comes to mind, use the prayer suggested in Step Eleven, "Thy will be done." Remember, each day we are to turn our self-will over to our Higher Power. In doing so, we get the serenity the program promises.

Finally, you'll find a section named Action for the Day. Our illness was fed by a set of actions. Harmful, destructive actions. A recovery program is also about action. Daily spiritual action. Spiritual action helps us feel better about ourselves and safer in the world. In this section, you'll be asked to take action that is, we hope, made to strengthen your program. Again, if the action fits, do it. If not, think of one that fits for you.

Also in this book, you'll see that we use words like addict and addiction. As time changes, so does language. When we use these terms, we are speaking to both the alcoholic and the drug dependent person. We see no difference between the two. We believe both suffer from the same deadly disease. We ask you to see yourself in the pages, and not in any one word.

Recovery is a process of finding balance between mind, body, and soul. Hopefully, this book will help you find or strengthen this balance.

In Step One, we accept our powerlessness over alcohol and other drugs. But we are powerless over many parts of life. We are powerless over other people. We are powerless over what our Higher Power has planned for us.|

Before recovery, we only believed in control. We tried to control everything. We fought against a basic truth, the truth that we are powerless over much of life.
When we accept this truth, we begin to see what power we do have. We have the power to make choices. When we're lonely, we have the power to reach out to others. We have the power to be honest or to lie. We have power over how we live our own lives.

Prayer for the Day
Higher Power, help me to know that it's You who is running my life. Help me to know that power comes from accepting I am powerless.

Action for the Day
I am powerless over much of life. Today I'll look to see how this is true. I'll look to see what I really have control over and what I don't.

January 2

The First Step tells us a lot about addiction. We were out of control. Our addiction was in control. Addiction managed everything. It managed our relationships. It managed how we behaved with our families. As Step One says, ". . . our lives had become unmanageable."

But we pretended we managed our lives. What a lie! Addiction ran our lives—not us. We weren't honest with ourselves. Our program heals us through self-honesty. We feel better just speaking the truth. We are becoming good people with spiritual values. Our spiritual journey has begun.

Prayer for the Day
Higher Power, I give You my life to manage. When I'm faced with a choice, I'll ask myself, "What would my Higher Power choose for me?"

Action for the Day
Today, I'll be honest with a friend about how unmanageable my life had become.

January 3

Never play leapfrog with a unicorn.

As we work Step One, we accept that alcohol and other drugs are poison to us. We accept our limits. This means we know that hanging around our drinking or using "buddies" can remind us of "the good old days." Hanging around "slippery places" means we could "slip" back into our old ways. This isn't testing our sobriety; it's being reckless with it.

So, let's accept our limits. Everybody has limits. When we know our limits, we protect our recovery against the people and places that pull us from our spiritual center. This is what true acceptance means.

Prayer for the Day
I pray for true acceptance. Higher Power, help me to stay away from slippery places. I will protect the gift You've given me.

Action for the Day
Today, I'll list the people and places that are risky for me to be around. I will share this list with my sponsor, my group, and my sober friends.

The best book on the subject

This is a very good introduction to the existing methods to produce synthetic gemstones. The edition covers a wide range o stones (i.e. emeralds, opals, diamonds, quartz etc) and techniques, and although I think there is too much information on synthetic diamonds (which I am not too interested) the book is still complete enough on the other topics too. Considering that not much has been published on journals about these methods, this books does a good job presenting the information that's around. The references are not very complete and the author could have used more information from patents (although there are none from Chatam and Gilson), but if you are an interested person or someone trying to find some information about synthesis of precious stones (which is very hard to find) this is the source. Kurt Nassau also wrote a second book on the Physics of Color, which is more theorical than this one.

When it comes to synthetic and/or simulated Gemstones, this book is TOP of its class! There is no better or more complete book on this topic.

A MUST have for any Serious Gem Collector, Gemologist, Appraiser, etc.

This book deals with every conceivable synthetic gemstone to date (latest edition of course). From the very first known synthetics, to the latest and most recent methods of creating gems. It lists the names of the procedures, the methods used to create them (stepwise) and the ways in which they differ (from their natural counterparts) and how they can be detected.

I can't say enough about this book! Definitely ONE OF A KIND!
