Insulted, the punctuation marks take off, and a few days later postcards arrive from Take-a-Break Lake. The kids want to write back, but they can't without any punctuation. Borrowing the unruly marks from the class next door, they write a letter begging the marks to return, a letter filled with usage errors that effectively makes their case. Childlike acrylic paintings on canvas "punctuate" the zaniness by turning the marks into characters whose banter exemplifies the marks' use. The messages on the postcards further typify usage (e.g., "Do you miss us? How much? Why couldn't we take a vacation sooner? Guess who?"). A straightforward list of punctuation rules rounds out this inventive and entertaining device for getting kids to understand usage, which proves that nothing makes sense without punctuation. Right? A Story With All The Right Marks!

This was a great book. It really shows how important punctuation is when writing. Punctuation takes a break from its work in a classroom and soon the students find that their world is a little more crazy without the marks to make it mind. The story line was well thought out and the list at the end of the book is a great teaching tool. The illustrations are wonderful. I also enjoyed the personality traits given to the individual marks of punctuation.

A World Without Punctuation?

This is a great tool for showing children the importance of punctuation in a fun format. In this book a teacher decides to give punctuation a vacation. Postcards arrive and the reader has to guess which form of punctuation wrote it to the class. Children are able to make connections to the chaos of not having punctuation and how it impacts understanding. Fortunately, punctuation returns and classroom life is much improved. I recommend this book.

Saxon system for home schoolers works great for us.

As a new home schooler, I like the Saxon system which provides all the information and materials we need. This book has the tests and work sheets so you know when to give the tests and when to do the practice sheets. This is a three part system with the Solutions manual with all the answers, the Tests and Worksheets, and the actual textbook. I had already purchased the non home school version of the textbook but it seems the other two match up perfectly with that version so I didn't buy the home school version of the textbook.

According to current research Saxon math produces the highest standardized testing scores and they use it in China - who ranks highest in math standardized testing scores in the world. We've used it for years and love it. All of my children are math officianatos and I can hardly handle Algebra. These books are written to the student as if a teacher were sitting there working with them. Be sure to get the supplemental packets as well if you really want it done the right way.

Saxon Delivers

I had Saxon when I was homeschooled, and really learned a lot from it. Now I am teaching and Saxon and it's the way to go. I really think the extra worksheets are a help even though they take a little bit more time. The repetition of the work sheets will ingrain the facts into the 5th grader's mind. I do recommend you also find the accompanying Dive DVD, just make sure you get the same version as your books. :)

Manly P. Hall was the founder of the Philosophical Research Society. In over seventy-five years of dynamic public activity, he delivered more than 8,000 lectures in the United States and abroad, and authored countless books, essays, and articles. In his lectures and writings, Manly Hall always emphasized the practical aspects of philosophy and religion as they applied to daily living. He restated for modern man those spiritual and ethical doctrines which have given humanity its noblest ideals and most adequate codes of conduct. Fantastic

I am so lucky to have fallen into this book via Amazon's great suggestion system. So much wisdom is contained within each line you will find that reading this book one time through is not enough. Superb book. I am definitely excited to read more from Manly P Hall. It is empowering as well to use this additional knowledge received from this book into other scriptures I have read such as the Gospel of Thomas and the New Testament. If you are a Christian or not, you will love this book.

Alastair Reynolds's first novel is "hard" SF on an epic scale, crammed with technological marvels and immensities. Its events take place over a relatively short period, but have roots a billion years old--when the Dawn War ravaged our galaxy.

Sylveste is the only man ever to return alive and sane from a Shroud, an enclave in space protected by awesome gravity-warping defenses: "a folding a billion times less severe should have required more energy than was stored in the entire rest-mass of the galaxy." Now an intuition he doesn't understand makes him explore the dead world Resurgam, whose birdlike natives long ago tripped some booby trap that made their own sun erupt in a deadly flare.

Meanwhile, the vast, decaying lightship Nostalgia for Infinity is coming for Sylveste, whose dead father (in AI simulation) could perhaps help the Captain, frozen near absolute zero yet still suffering monstrous transformation by nanotech plague. Far from his best work

Compared to his more recent Revenger, this is a dud. Definitely a dire need for a good editor in the later third of the book. Lots of weird terminology, irrelevant scientific digressions, and uncharacteristic behavior by the characters. For example a character that just had an inner dialog about detesting someone turns around and volunteers to help him to the infirmary (contrived so he'd be out of the room when something else happened). How about 'not unguilty' as a strange double negative? Perhaps 'not innocent' would have been better? Or maybe just guilty? And of course planets are never encircled or surrounded, they are 'englobed.' Yup. Also sense defying alliterations just to get the sound of them. And, finally there were obviously sections removed by some editor, because a couple of scenes highlight information that is NOT present in the book.

Not quite House of Suns but still a great read

The setting is a bit like the dystopia from which springs an advanced post-human civilization. It's fantastical but still gritty and, as is the case with House of Suns, mostly restricted by the rule of physics. There are themes of transhumanism and truly alien entities, but no one is traveling faster than the speed of light and the Reynolds gives grounded explanations of the more important technologies. The plot is grander than it appears at first glance and spans long stretches of time (though not the mind-boggling spans found in House of Suns), and the characters are compelling if, ultimately, not completely fleshed out.

If you like Reynolds, you'll like Revelation Space.

Ocassionally flawed, but very much enjoyable

While I found the first quarter of this novel quite hard to get into, after the initial confusion as to the purpose of what I was reading and the slight headache of adapting to mr. Reynold's style, I began to be so engrossed into the story, that I was hardly able to put the book down.

The slight annoyance that the first truly inciting incident, in my opinion, that pertains to the actual main plot, happened over 100 pages in, was quickly forgotten as one intriguing thing after another kept propelling me deeper and deeper into the story.

Without rehashing the plot or the main ideas that fed this fascinating space opera, let me just say that the many tiny threads of this tapestry come together beautifully, making perfect sense, no single loose end left dangling, no curiosity unsatisfied, and no thirst unquenched.

The resolution is highly gratifying, and measures up to the mounting tension. And if you enjoy a bit of hard science-fiction, Reynold's love of explaining things in detail, without ever getting info-dumpy, will fully satisfy as well. The intriguing main character, Dan Sylveste, and the equally interesting cast converging on him, are suitable vessels to explore the vastness of Reynold's imagination. And the grand setting he created for them to act against is truly unforgettable.

All in all, a very recommendable novel, especially for pretentious readers. Not so well suited for impatient readers looking for immediate, effortless satisfaction.
