I used this book to pass my West E- ELL test without taking any ELL classes. If you study this well enough and have some experience working with ELL students, you should do great!

NOT Worth the Price!

I cannot begin to describe how disappointing this book was. Do NOT purchase it unless you can find it for less than $20, or you may feel as cheated as I do. Usually I don't waste my time with scathing reviews, but this tome is expensive, and the people buying it are in education, which isn't known for loading a bank account. I purchased this book because I was overwhelmed by the enormous and vague exam framework, and I was hoping this would guide me. It hardly did.
Certainly there are few helpful features, such as the practice exam with explanations in answers, or the test strategies (let's be honest though, most of the people taking this exam are educated & likely aware of most the "helpful hints" like enough getting sleep and answering all questions). Below is a list outlining my frustrations.
REASONS I ADVISE AGAINST THIS TEXT:
1.) Lacks CRITICAL information.
- It DOESN'T even cover HALF the features in the exam framework/study guide (provided by the test admin).
- Some of the practice quiz questions reference terms and phrases that aren't even offered in the book.
- This is my biggest complaint, frankly, and the catalyst for this review.
2.) Disorganization.
- The progression isn't sensical.
- They did divide it into three sections and created paragraphs (with headings) for each topic, but that's about it.
- Some topics have three or four paragraphs spread throughout the book with almost identical information, rather than being logically grouped and editing out redundancies.
- They really should've split things out into sections rather than lumping four theorists into one paragraph, for example. It may have made for uneven paragraphs, but it would've been more logical.
- It would make much more sense to either organize it according to the standards presented by Pearson in the framework (sections 001-0017), or to offer background, definitions, & etc., followed by the strategies for each major topic.
- Often vocabulary is used in paragraphs before it's defined (later in the text).
- Some topics were covered, almost identically, but peppered throughout the text. Literally, they would cover almost identical information and be pages apart.
- They were so committed to paragraphs of roughly the same size, that they didn't recognize the organizational issue that actually created.
3.) Lacks context.
- Most topics are introduced without any context, making it difficult to grasp some of the concepts (which, ironically, is a big part of the problem ELLs experience... you know... the thing this book teaches strategies to repair.) or how they matter. Sometimes they'd introduce a theorist and what he's popular for, but not explain how it shaped ELL instruction, for example.
- I had to infer and research a great deal of information.
- Many theories or strategies were introduced but not clearly delineated. The language in definition for somethings is so vague or similar to other theories that it's incredibly difficult to understand that differences between.
4.) Poor authorship/editorial consistency.
- I'll be honest, at this point, I'm just so frustrated that I wasted my money and time that I'm being persnickety, but this IS a text aimed at educators, so it feels lazy.
- It's evident that different people wrote different passages.
- Sometimes it's vague, wordy, and uses passive voice, and sometimes it's painfully succinct, offering incomplete explanations.
- The writing is rarely gender neutral (and ESL focuses on culture and bias awareness), but occasionally slips into the formal & neutral "one" at random.
This book feels like a hasty creation that takes advantage of anxious test-takers. //rant
