Preface

At the edge of the new millennium, we are at the intersection of new business and technology trends that together will transform the way IT infrastructures for business applications are set up. The mySAP.com initiative marks the beginning of a new era of business collaboration. At an astonishingly fast pace, the mySAP vision became a business framework reality, providing a complete portfolio of business functionality for the Internet economy. However, each ecosystem needs a solid technical foundation. This foundation has to be provided by IT infrastructures, consisting of servers, storage, and networks. The basic need for a performing, reliable, and cost-effective platform is still there, if not stronger. In a world where competition is only a mouse click away, an IT infrastructure for an interconnected ecosystem must provide:

  • High Performance: No matter how long the personal think time of a user is, he or she expects immediate response from the system whenever the key is pressed. Users waiting for their entries to be processed are unproductive by definition, and even milliseconds add up to years when there are millions of transactions over time. Therefore, short response time is the Holy Grail of a mySAP.com IT infrastructure.
  • High Availability: SAP systems are the business engines that drive a corporation's mission-critical core business functions. In the Internet ecosystem, where the information infrastructure forms the central nervous system of an enterprise, any disruption leads to an immediate paralysis of the attached branch or organization. Therefore, high availability is mandatory for a mySAP.com infrastructure.
  • Low Total Cost of Ownership: The implementation of a mySAP.com system is a strategic business decision with serious budgetary implications. However, the ongoing operational costs of the infrastructure may be even larger than the initial purchase price. Therefore, the total cost of ownership (TCO) for a mySAP.com infrastructure has to be considered.

To satisfy these demands, a holistic approach is needed. Only a joint effort can make a mySAP.com project successful. However, the experts responsible for the different areas of IT infrastructure within an organization use different terminology and often have a quite different understanding of the requirements. Thus, managers responsible for the technical aspects of an SAP implementation have a tough job. To manage the potential chaos requires a basic understanding of the technology and terminology used for mySAP.com infrastructures. Simply investing in the latest technology solutions isn't always the right answer.

In many discussions with customers, the authors learned that there is a need for a guide to help close the understanding gap between the mySAP.com requirements and the available technologies. This book presents the various infrastructure facets involved in a mySAP.com project, going into more detail when necessary to help explain the requirements of SAP infrastructures so that even those not considered specialists could benefit. Throughout the book practical hints are provided to help focus on the important, as well as sometimes less obvious, solution and configuration choices to be made. The scope of the book, however, is limited to the technical design aspects of the IT infrastructure. Details of the installation and customizing of the SAP software itself, and the even more critical challenges of business process reengineering, are not discussed in this book.

The solutions and architecture described in this book are related to the most recent SAP releases available. In response to market demand, new hardware and software solutions are emerging from the labs at an increasing pace. However, the core software technology and architectures take longer to evolve, thus the basic server, storage, and network technology solutions presented in this book may apply to even future versions of SAP software. In addition, many of these technical solutions presented are valid for other types of client/server-based, non-SAP, enterprise software solutions.

This book was purposely written as an overview of the technical solutions needed for designing hardware infrastructure proposals. It is not intended as in implementation guide. Although this book was written generically by intention, both authors are members of the HP-SAP International Competence Center. Therefore, the opinions expressed are based primarily on experiences with the numerous Hewlett-Packard solutions developed for mySAP.com infrastructures. The HP-SAP International Competence Center, founded in 1989 and operated jointly by SAP and HP, enjoys the longest experience with SAP client/server infrastructures. HP products, proven in several thousand installations, are therefore primarily used as solution examples.

How This Book Is Organized

This book is organized in chapters. Chapter 1 sets the foundation for what mySAP.com and SAP systems are all about from an IT perspective. It provides a short review of the mySAP.com Business Applications, along with the SAP system architecture relevant for the remaining chapters.

Chapter 2 introduces the server systems used with SAP software. The focus is on the server technologies that are typically specified, with a detailed look at processor and memory designs. In addition, the aspects of consolidating multiple SAP systems on one server are presented. Chapter 3 focuses on sizing principles, which are used to determine the server's processor and memory configurations. It reviews the various sizing methodologies available, which are illustrated with simple examples.

Chapter 4 presents the hot topic of data storage, with a focus on disk system technology for SAP database servers. A unique approach to sizing disk systems for performance is presented in this chapter. It also reviews many of the advanced data management features found in enterprise storage systems.

Chapter 5 is about high availability and recovery solutions for SAP systems. The solutions presented in this chapter are focused on protecting the SAP application, database, and server and storage layers of the mySAP.com solution stack. However, because technology solutions alone do not make a system highly available, an HA administration philosophy is also presented.

Chapter 6 is about client PCs with focus on the front-end user interfaces for use with SAP. It also addresses output management and printing solutions for SAP.

Chapters 7 through 11 focus on network infrastructure solutions for SAP, including the network requirements of SAP, cabling design, LANs, and WANs. In larger organizations, the network administrators are usually NOT on the application and server/storage administration teams. However, they also must be aware of the performance and availability demands of mySAP.com solutions. This is especially important when response time and availability guarantees are made to the user's desktop.

Chapter 12 is related to connecting mySAP.com systems to the Internet. This reviews the solutions needed for the mySAP.com middleware or Internet Transaction Server.

Each chapter attempts to address the performance, availability, and total cost of ownership topics for its particular set of technology solutions. In addition, each chapter provides an introduction and a summary with bullets highlighting the major recommendations.

Everything ones needs to know about sizing an SAP system.
By L. Johnson
This book is top notch. I am constantly using this book as a reference point as I work with clients to size their SAP landscapes. It is amazing the insight Michael brings to infrastructure.

Sadly, with the cloud I envision many clients moving away from on-premise infrastructure, but until then there is not better reference.

Very Good Book for beginners or experts
By A Customer
I wish that I had this book when we started our SAP project. This book will help anyone who is thinking about installing or upgrading SAP. It helps explain how SAP software will use the hardware. And how all of the pieces fit together. Even though this book is by HP press it stays true to the theme. They do try and "sell" HP hardware or solutions every once in awhile, but for the most part this book is generic in vendor. You won't go wrong with reading this book or just having it for reference the next time you have to upgrade your hardware or if you are having response problems and need to know how to evaluate your hardware. We have been an SAP customer for six years and have grown up with SAP in the US (started at version 2.1 and have just completed our 4.6 upgrade!).

Excellent reference on SAP Infrastructure
By Mario Luna Arroyo
I highly recommend this book to companies that are going to start an SAP project. The book provides the foundation to design and build a solid technical infrastructure for SAP. Moreover, it is easy to read, covers every aspect, and is plenty of examples.
I am an experienced SAP technical consultant and wish this book were available some years ago. On common problem I have seen is that companies don't understand, from the infrastructure point of view, what an SAP project involves. The objective of this book is to make them aware of what they don't know (and could hurt them) at the right time, which is before the project actually starts.

Don Quixote is the classic story. Called the first modern novel, this marvelous book has stood the test of time to become irrevocably intertwined with the fabric of society. Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. From Publishers Weekly
There would seem to be little reason for yet another translation of Don Quixote. Translated into English some 20 times since the novel appeared in two parts in 1605 and 1615, and at least five times in the last half-century, it is currently available in multiple editions (the most recent is the 1999 Norton Critical Edition translated by Burton Raffel). Yet Grossman bravely attempts a fresh rendition of the adventures of the intrepid knight Don Quixote and his humble squire Sancho Panza. As the respected translator of many of Latin America's finest writers (among them Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa), she is well suited to the task, and her translation is admirably readable and consistent while managing to retain the vigor, sly humor and colloquial playfulness of the Spanish. Erring on the side of the literal, she isn't afraid to turn out clunky sentences; what she loses in smoothness and elegance she gains in vitality. The text is free of archaisms the contemporary reader will rarely stumble over a word and the footnotes (though rather erratically supplied) are generally helpful. Her version easily bests Raffel's ambitious but eccentric and uneven effort, and though it may not immediately supplant standard translations by J.M. Cohen, Samuel Putnam and Walter Starkie, it should give them a run for their money. Against the odds, Grossman has given us an honest, robust and freshly revelatory Quixote for our times.

From the Back Cover

New York Times Bestseller

Widely regarded as the world's first modern novel, and one of the funniest and most tragic books ever written, Don Quixote chronicles the famous picaresque adventures of the noble knight-errant Don Quixote of La Mancha and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, as they travel through sixteenth-century Spain. Unless you read Spanish, you've never read Don Quixote as presented by the formidable translator Edith Grossman, now in deluxe paperback.

It may be great, but Kindle edition messes up again
By Danmil
I have not read most of this yet, but I already know the Kindle edition is, ONCE AGAIN, badly formatted. The book starts out with some poems, and this is how the first one looks:

If to reach goodly read-
oh book, you proceed with cau-,
you cannot, by the fool-,
be called a stumbling nin-.
But if you are too impa
and pull the loaf untime-
from the fire and go careen-
into the hands of the dim
you'll see them lost and puzz-
though they long to appear learn-.

Looking at this travesty, I can't feel too optimistic about the rest of the book. I feel like I got ripped off for my $1.99.

Grossman's Translation of Don Quixote: The Emperor Has No Clothes
By Ian B. Cooper
Other than the fact that it's new and heavily hyped, I don't know how the Edith Grossman translation of Don Quixote is getting so many good reviews. It seems to me that the emperor has no clothes. To me Ms. Grossman's translation is a hard read, not because of Cervantes, but because Grossman's style is jarring, lacks the humor of the original and places way too much emphasis on translating Cervantes literally at the expense of comprehension.

Here's just one example of the latter failing:

"...it still fills me with misgivings to think that powder and tin may deprive me of the opportunity to become famous and renowned throughout the known world for the valor of my arm and the sharp edge of my sword."

Powder and tin? What does that mean? It's as incomprehensible to a modern reader as it would be to a reader in any of the 400 years between today and the book's first translation into English. Clearly Edith Grossman has no clue what Cervantes is talking about, as no one uses the term "powder and tin" in English and there are any number of phrases that would get the meaning across better: "powder and shot" or "gunpowder and lead" are comprehensible even to modern readers who know next to nothing of the technologies of 17th Century firearms, so why on Earth does she opt for a translation that no one has much chance of understanding except by stumbling on the phrase and having to search for a contextual explanation?

Cervantes said that prose should be "plain," "bare" and "unadorned." Grossman's prose is anything but. Her style is adorned, puffed-up and needlessly complicated - probably because she's way too concerned with a literal translation. For example, we have her describe a workman as:

"...a man-of-all-work who did everything from saddling the horse to pruning the trees."

A "man-of-all-work"? Does she mean a handyman? If she means a handyman, why not call him a handyman, or a laborer? Cervantes, had he written in English, surely would have done so. I mean, surely a phrase could be found that gets across the meaning without making up phrases that don't exist naturally in ordinary English.

And Grossman's desire to translate too literally leads to the most unforgivable sin, that of humorlessness. Cervantes is exuberant - he winks at the audience while he's telling his story. Yet Grossman misses the mark far too often. Take the following excerpt as an example:

"... you can believe that I would like this book, the child of my understanding, to be the most beautiful, the most brilliant, and the most discreet that anyone could imagine."

"Would like" can have a couple of meanings, but it doesn't necessarily convey the ironic meaning that Cervantes surely meant to convey - that of failure to live up to the desire. Certainly the text goes on to make the issue clear, but Grossman has missed a chance to make it crystal clear in the place the author surely intended to make it crystal clear, so the audience is left puzzled for far too long, seeking the author's intent instead of reading along while smiling in the shared humor.

Compare this to Putnam's "...you may believe me when I tell you that I should have liked this book, which is the child of my brain, to be the fairest, the sprightliest, and the cleverest that could be imagined." Certainly, Putnam, writing 60 years ago, sounds a little less modern, but in using the term "should have liked", he does find the sly wink in Cervantes' text and makes it clear at the point it should be made clear. Grossman does not. While her translation may achieve some kind of literal precision, it surely fails to quite achieve the precise meaning of the phrase.

If it was only a matter of a few missteps, I could forgive her - after all, no translation is perfect. However, these kinds of flaws appear throughout the book. As such, I think the translation is a bad one. It may be that Grossman achieves some sort of stylistic or literary perfection, but I don't see it, and I'm not sure that should be what a translator should be aiming for anyway. To me, it seems that, once people get beyond the hype, they won't be able to see what all the fuss was about.

Putnam, in his introduction to his translation of Don Quixote, warns that translators should not "betray the spirit by too faithful an aderence to the letter". I feel Edith Grossman would have done well to take those words to heart before she created her translation of this great book.

There are, by the way, three translations that I rate highly (I own all three):

1. Putnam's is considered a classic, though it is a little dated, and his notes are all at the back of the book (so I find them difficult to reference while reading. The Modern Library version is a nice hardcover.

2. Rutherford's translation is especially good for British English readers, but again his notes are all at the back of the book. Also, the only version I know of his book is paperback, by Penguin Classics.

3. Tom Lathrop's version is my favorite, with notes on the same page as the text. He can get carried away with his notes, but they do help. Unfortunately, this book is only available in softback, and it's by Signet Classics, and their paperbacks always seem cheaply made. Hopefully his translation will get a nice hardbound treatment soon, because his translation deserves to become the new standard by which all Don Quixote translations are measured.

Read it while you have dreams to make true
By Francisco J. Torres
I read this book when I was in my twenties and I liked the narrative and loved the people of Spain. Now that I am 50 years old I am reading it again and it is giving me a different perspective about life. I admire Don Quixote for seeing the world as a place to make true his dreams and fantasies

According to experts, this is one of the best books ever written, and always appears on the lists of best novels that have been published. It is the second most translated book after the Bible. It was given the distinction of "Best literary work ever written" by the Norwegian Book Club based on a vote of 100 weel known writers from 54 countries. It was one of the favorite books of Thomas Jefferson and was used as a reference by famous American writers such as Mark Twain, Herman Melville and William Faulkner. The Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky referred to this book as "the only conclusion that can be drawn from life if the world came to an end" Masterpieces of world literature such as Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, and Dostoevsky's The Idiot, are inspired by Don Quixote and were deliberately written based on the admiration that these writers felt for Cervantes’ book.

Don Quixote has all the basic ingredients to entertain: humor, romance, fights and horse chasing, among others. It was innovative at the time of publication and it is considered the first novel in modern literature. This was the first book in which different opinions and viewpoints coexisted harmoniously in the same environment. The dialogues between the characters are masterfully written and inspired by the Spanish theatrical tradition of writers such as Lope de Vega.

Don Quixote follows his quest as a knight with deep passion and commitment, always certain that his actions make a great contribution to the world. He shows the highest respect for all the people that he finds in his journey; being friends or rivals. But each time his fantasies crash with crude reality, as he and Sancho get beaten, injured, mocked and deceived. The confrontation between reality and fantasy is in episode of this book. Although Don Quixote tries desperately to become a hero he cannot be different than any other human being: proud and humble, strong and weak, wise and crazy

Sancho is always aware of Don Quixote’s madness, but he follows him loyally despite the fact that he often gets the worst part of the beatings. A great theme of this book is the friendship that these two different men develop based on mutual respect; Sancho learns from Don Quixote to put fantasies into his life and Don Quixote sees reality through Sancho’s’ companionship. The dialogues between Don Quixote and Sancho are very rich, often riddled with humor, but always revealing deeper human nature

All who have read Don Quixote have their own interpretation that often changes with age. After all, this interpretation depends on how everyone sees life. In this sense, Don Quixote can be seen as a description of life in form, rhythm and substance. The Peruvian writer, recipient of the Nobel Price of Literature, Mario Vargas Llosa said that Don Quixote is the personification of a disproportionate love of freedom and a rebellious spirit

Combustion in its heyday
By ThirstyBrooks
This is third of a continuing series of books (1955, 1966, 1981, 1993) known in the trade as "The Combustion Book." It collects the commentary and insights from boiler experts at Combustion Engineering (today's Alstom Power). This book and a competing volume from Babcock & Wilcox titled "Steam" represent the collected wisdom of American solid fuel firing expertise at its peak.

The material is written at an easy reading level for an undergraduate engineering text. Only in the 'Combustion Processes' and 'Performance Design' chapters did equations sneak into the text. There, you'll want to be comfortable with easy differential notation. The book was written before the days of desktop computers and is not a repository of heat transfer equations.

Joe Singer organized and coordinated a writing effort that involved many senior people in more than a dozen engineering and research departments. Because it was written just before word processors became common, it represents a monumental integration of field experience and fact checking. It presents material considered public knowledge at the time, so it does not give the details of specific field failure risks.

At 866 pages plus 176 pages of appendices, "The Combustion Book" anchored many engineering shelves for nearly a decade until it was joined by a new edition of the rival B& W "Steam Book" at 825 pages plus 51 pages, with a larger page format and smaller type.

The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing, by Philip Maffetone

Are you a triathlete, runner, cyclist, swimmer, cross-country skier, or other athlete seeking greater endurance? The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing teaches athletes how to stay healthy, achieve optimal athletic potential, and be injury-free for many productive years. Dr. Philip Maffetone’s approach to endurance offers a truly “individualized” outlook and unique system that emphasizes building a strong aerobic base for increased fat burning, weight loss, sustained energy, and a healthy immune system. Good nutrition and stress reduction are also key to this commonsense, big-picture approach.

In addition, Dr. Maffetone dispels many of the commonly held myths that linger in participatory sports—and which adversely impact performance—and explains the “truths” about endurance, such as:

  • The need to train slower to race faster will enable your aerobic system to improve endurance
  • Why expensive running shoes can actually cause foot and leg injuries
  • The fact that refined carbohydrates actually reduce endurance energy and disrupt hormone balance
  • And more.
If you are looking to increase your endurance and maximize your athletic potential, The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing is your one-stop guide to training and racing effectively.

Review
"Dr. Maffetone shares his lifetime of experience in helping athletes of all abilities become better." ----Dr. Tim Noakes, author of "Lore of Running"

"If you don't read Phil Maffetone, you're turning your back on one of the most powerful, probing minds in endurance sports. The brilliance of Maffetone's work is his re-discovery of the ancient understanding that the human engine doesn't need to be fueled on suffering, and that pain is only the penalty you pay for back-burnering your brain. The best advice you could give any athlete, no matter what their level, is to read Maffetone and start over." ----Christopher McDougall, author of "Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe"

"In the over-populated world of fitness and health books, what does this new one have to offer? The first thing that springs to mind is authority. Methodology is another element that sets the book apart. Because of its tailor-made approach, the book is good for beginners and for those who've read and seen it all, but who are still not performing their best." --Lava Magazine

The Best Hollistic Approach to Endurance for Life
By Dr. Mark Cucuzzella
Phil Maffetone has followed up his highly influential works of over a decade ago with a volume not only validated by basic science and research but more importantly experienced and felt by those willing to use the methods. I am a physician and lifelong distance runner trying now to teach healthy lifelong endurance for patients to help them deal with life...not just athletics. I discovered Phil's principles after recovering from foot surgeries from overuse running injuries in 2000. Training slower was a tough pill to swallow at first but as soon as I saw the results of aerobic development in how I felt all day there was no turning back to the "no pain, no gain" approach. Now its "No Pain, Thank You."
With his methods I've achieve a sub 2:35 marathon in 4 decades and we've even opened a small running and walking store in a small rural community teaching his principles ([...]
We are also trying to transform how the US Air Force approaches fitness and help them achieve success in their annual fitness tests and their demanding jobs. This, of course, involves Maffetone principles.

A book with some good info but lots of shortcomings
By Amazon Customer
I want to highly recommend this book and its approach [and I have, in the past, to friends] but I would now hesitate after 1 year with Maffetone. Today, I find myself unsure of the principles and frustrated with the gaps left open within this book. Let me summarize what I have found that I believe is very worthwhile and/or appealing:

* The principle that fat utilization must be maximized for peak endurance performance

* Dietary principles of reducing excessive carbohydrate intake and eliminating allergenic foods (such as gluten) for optimal health

* The appeal of an relatively easy-intensity way to good health and peak performance

As one who'd tried higher intensity training efforts for amateur running and cycling, I found Maffetone's message very appealing. I especially gravitated to it after cutting the carbohydrate in my diet which limited my access to higher intensity training. I tried adhering to his heart-rate based formula to keep my training intensities within the prescribed training band and started, after 3 months, to see slivers of success in training. On the treadmill, over time, I eventually saw a 0.5 mph improvement in pace at the same heart rate. On the bicycle trainer, a 30 watt improvement at Maff heart rates. These changes were very gradual, however, as I train only 3-4 hours / week. In fact, for 3 months, I saw virtually NO improvement at all. Now, I was not a perfect adherent to the principle of NO anaerobic work; I did weight train, but only 2x a week and only for 30 minutes at a time (actual time in the act of weight lifting was likely only 15 min a week with rest-between-sets time factored out). Does this invalidate my results? I should hope that the human body is not so frail that a mere lifting of something heavy a couple of times, on off days, is enough to completely destroy aerobic adaptations. What a weak species we would be. Consider that I'm not training 10-15 hours a week as many, more dedicated runners might be doing. Either way, you should know from where I'm coming from. Maffetone does indicate that he considers any aerobic training in excess of his prescribed heart rate formula or weight training of ANY kind (regardless of the heart rate) to be `anaerobic' work that could interfere or destroy aerobic adaptations. Nevertheless, I do feel that my training schedule, overall, was light enough that I was exercising well within my recover abilities. Nevertheless, my results on his program were modest at best. I sleep well, eat fantastically healthy compared to the average Joe (frutis, vegetables, low carb diet, omega-3s daily, lean meats, healthy amounts of good fats --- you get the point). Even though I did see what could be regarded as "significant" improvement in a couple of markers, I found that very little of this translated during races. As such, let me summarize the issues I've come to see with the Maffetone method:

* The 180 formula does NOT take into account individual variations in heart rate stroke volume or muscle physiology for different sports. Maffetone does not consider maximum heart rate nor resting heart rate to be significant. Instead, his formulas are purely a function of age and a few modifiers that have nothing to do with your heart's individual characteristics. This seems to fly in the face of common sense and science. If you have a larger heart with a greater stroke volume, then you will be pumping more blood at 140 beats, doing more work and feeling a higher level of perceived exertion (and likely have a lower max heart rate) than someone with a smaller heart who, at 140 beats, might feel as though they are barely working. This is why most heart rate-based programs factor in maximum (and some resting heart rate) - the level of exertion for someone with a max hr at 170 will be different than someone with a max of 200. In addition, Maffetone does not consider "perceived exertion" which varies between sports at a given heart rate, to be significant: one Maff heart rate for all. Really? A swimmer should use the same heart rate as a runner though we know that the muscle composition of the upper body is likely very different than the legs (which are designed for long-range locomotion)? Isn't that why you would likely have a higher perceived exertion at a given heart rate in swimming or perhaps cycling than running - different muscle fiber composition? I should think so but Maff believes that the same metabolic demands are being made so the training effect is identical. I dare to say that this is likely to be proved wrong by science but I only dispute it today by my intuition that "perceived " exertion is a real phenomenon that is being ignored by Maffetone. He does not present a cogent explanation for ignoring it other than saying that weight bearing sports produce a higher perceived exertion. Weak. It certainly doesn't explain the difference between cycling and swimming which are both non-weight bearing but generate different perceived exertions. I strongly suspect that more sugar-burning aerobic fibers are involved in swimming given the use of upper body muscles and, hence, the higher perceived exertion than running (which uses muscles with a higher % of red muscle fibers) at a given heart rate but that's' for a physiologist to work out. I don't buy Maff's explanation at all, however.

* There is absolutely no guidance with regard to training volumes for different sports what-so-ever. Inexcusable. On the one hand, we're given, effectively, a simple one-size-fits-all 180 heart rate formula that does not take into account anything substantive in the way of individual cardiovascular physiology - yet we're told that training volumes are largely and individual matter. OK, fine, but can you give me a suggestion for the minimums here? A range? Can I improve at such low heart rates training 3x a week for 30 minutes a day? No guidance. Let me save you some suspense here - unlikely. For a book about `racing', there's an almost total lack of any sort of even semi-structured program regarding durations and frequency for ANY sport (save one small and not very useful example of a triathlete schedule)- just a lot of sidebar anecdotes of people training for unspecified periods of time and having "success" or reducing volumes, when specified, from 18 to 12 hours a week (volumes far in excess of many amateurs I know). While it might vary from individual to individual and given your goals, I think we can all agree that training 1x/week for 1 minute will get you nowhere. So there, that's a lower boundary we can all agree on. Extreme case? Yes - but the point is one can and ought to give a lower limit from which to start a training program to see progress and then principles upon which to evaluate whether volume should increase or decrease.

* Heart rate variations are not thoroughly discussed. There seems to be this implicit and rather impractical notion that you can train up to the maximum prescribed heart rate and just hold it there - as if it is some number that can be reached and held. If my maximum "aerobic" heart rate, as prescribed by the 180 formula, is 140, I can guarantee you it will drift to 141, 142, even 144 and then back to 140, 139, 138 within any given 2 minute period of time - I know, I've seen it happen all the time. At such low heart rates, my body is so relaxed that if I so much as *think* about something a little exciting, my heart rate will spike. How much variation around my max Maff heart rate should be tolerated? We're told, none. So, given the natural variation in heart rate that occurs in training (i.e. I see +/- 3 beats, routinely), best to play it safe and shoot for Maff -3 so as not to exceed it for even a brief period. All in all, at such low heart rates, it is subject to considerable "noise" from your state-of-mind, thoughts, ambient temperatures, etc.

* Mis-use of the term "aerobic". Maffetone clearly defines what he means by "aerobic" early on to refer to that which uses predominately fat for fuel while fully acknowledging that, technically, sugar is burned aerobically as well. Nevertheless, anything that uses sugar, predominately, for fuel, is deemed anaerobic for purposes of discussion in the book. Fine. However, later in the book, he seeks to emphasize the value of his training principles by pointing out that the aerobic system provides 99% of the energy for long distance aerobic events. OK, wait a minute. Now, yes, that's true, but that involves both the sugar and fat burning systems (and sugar burning would actually account for a larger portion of that 99% than fat at higher intensity aerobic events) but he "implies" that it's the fat burning system providing that 99%. Let's keep the discussion about "aerobic" system straight here and acknowledge that the sugar-burning component IS a critical system for racing success as well.

* Results. Bottom line, if you train for modest volumes (read: 5 hours / week or fewer), I think your success will be modest at best. I conducted 95% of my aerobic training with Maffetone principles and, while I've seen some improvement, it was absolutely dwarfed, in comparison, by my prior success with programs such as Smart Coach provided by Runner's world wherein, training at more moderate intensities for most of my longer runs and doing just one speed workout a week resulted in a 9 minute improvement in my half marathon time in just 3.5 months of training (40s/mile improvement in pace). My average training week was only 18 miles/week (3 hours/week) when using the program prescribed by Smart Coach [and I weight trained....]. Compare that to training for 4-5 hours / week using Maff and I've seen - I don't know,....maybe 1-2 minutes of improvement for a half marathon- if you squint. In fact, Chris Carmichael has pointed out in his book "The Time-Crunched Cyclist" that, if you have less than 8 hours / week to train, traditional, lower-intensity programs just don't work for such folks. That's the only guidance I have right now and I would pass that on to those considering the Maff approach.

So, while I think there is some value here, I think a follow-on book with much more specific guidance is needed. Realistic training expectations need to be established based on possible training volumes. Actual training programs should be indicated with clear discussions of "frequency" and "duration" for running, cycling, swimming and triathlons. Different distances could be discussed as well. Given the size of this book, the actual intellectual content could have been condensed to 1/3 the size. That leaves 2/3rd of relative fluff that could have been used to address the aforementioned gaps in concrete training advice and coaching.

Buy a heart rate monitor and work slower
By P. Shaw
That's what 90% of this book's information revolves around, so if you are going to use his methods, understand that you will need one, and that you will be monitoring all of your workouts.

There is a lot of other information in the book, and he has added a lot of anecdotes from individuals that have used his methods and had success, so whatever your sport or activity, if you are doubting what he says, others have too, but doing it his way has given them great results. Just about every person that gives you their story basically says "I thought there was no way this would work, it sucked and I thought that I was losing my speed and ability, and in the end I was not only faster, but I had fewer injuries."

I just want you to be mentally prepared for the fact that if you buy this book, and are going to use his methods, you should understand that buying a heart rate monitor is mandatory.

Also, there aren't really any pictures or charts that are better in the print version than the kindle version, so if you are trying to decide if the hard copy is worth it, you can get the kindle without losing anything.

Fortunately, the TTC is
By J. Arnold
I am in a Tao Teh Ching study group, and we use The Tao of Leadership as one of our interpretive sources. It is not- and doesn't pretend to be- a translation. It offers a slant on the TTC as a guide to wise group leadership, whether you are a business owner, a middle manager, or leading a TTC study group. Fortunately, the TTC is, among other things. a guide to leadership since it frequently addresses the ruler, so it lends itself to Heider's approach. His interpretations are sensitive, revealing, nuanced, and fresh. A welcome addition to the vast body of literature on the TTC.

Powerful insights on becoming a more effective leader.
By Amazon Veteran
Valuable insights about leadership. Focuses on how your behavior can make you a more effective leader and help those you lead be better, too. Each chapter or observation is brief but often articulates some insight one kind of had but never quite articulated. When hearing complaints or objections, for example, pushing back is generally the wrong thing to do, certainly at first; better to absorb the complaint or objection, the energy of the complainer and then try to illuminate the situation. Or, seeing that the role of the leader is to illuminate what needs to be worked on, to help others see it clearly so that the group's energy can be best used to solve the issue or pursue the goal. I have not read this book in perhaps 20 years, but it sticks with me. I found it the most useful book on leadership I ever encountered.

Timeless wisdom for each new age
By Robert Morris
The value and impact of leadership can be measured in many different ways. Two of the most common approaches focus on who a leader is, and, on what a leader achieves. In my opinion, books that focus on authentic, values-driven leadership are part of a tradition that can be traced back to Lao Tzu and his classic, Tao Te Ching, whereas books that focus on high-impact, results-driven leadership are part of a tradition that can be traced back to Sun Tzu and his classic, The Art of War.

As John Heider explains in the Introduction to this volume, Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching "is one of China's best loved books of wisdom. It was originally addressed to the sage and to the wise political rulers of the fifth century B.C." Lao Tzu's book is "simple and makes sense. But even more important, is the fact that Tau Te Ching persuasively unites leadership skills and the leader's way of life: our work is our path." Here is my personal favorite among many passages in a work that offers timeless wisdom for each new age:

"Learn from the people
Plan with the people
Begin with what they have
Build on what they know
Of the best leaders
When the task is accomplished
The people will remark
We have done it ourselves."

The wisdom of these observations is relevant to our own age, especially given the unique challenges leaders now face. For example, how to increase and nourish positive and productive employee engagement at all levels and in all areas? How to develop and then sustain a culture of mutual respect and trust between and among everyone involved?

Heider suggests that Lao Tzu focuses on three separate but interdependent topics:

1. Natural law (how things happen)
2. A way of living (how to live in "conscious harmony" with natural law)
3. A method of leadership (how to govern or educate others in accordance with natural law)

Heider's adaptation of the Tao is based on his experiences in the classroom when he and his students discuss various passages and various translations of those passages. As he acknowledges, what he offers is his own version of the meaning of Lao Tzu's own words. Here's my take: For aspiring leaders, the first issue to address is "Who and what am I?" Next, "Who and what must an effective leader be?" Then, "What specifically must I understand -- and accept as well as relinquish -- to become such a leader?" Finally, "How can I help other aspiring leaders to complete that process of development?"

Here are a few of the dozens of passages in Heider's version that caught my eye:

o On Tao Means How: "Tao is a principle. Creation, on the other hand, is a process. That is all there is: principle and process., how and what. All creation unfolds according to Tao. There is no other way."

o On Success: "A good reputation naturally arises from doing good work. But if you try to cherish your reputation, if you try to preserve it, you lose the freedom and honesty necessary for further development."

o On Traditional Wisdom: "Most people are plagued by endless needs, but the wise leader is content with relatively little. Most people lead busy lives, but the wise leader is quiet and reflective. Most people seek stimulation and novelty, but the wise leader prefers what is common and natural.

"Being content permits simplicity in life. What is common is universal. What is natural is close to the source of creation.

"This is traditional wisdom."

o On Unity: "Tao cannot be defined. One can only say that it is the single principle responsible for every event or thing. When the leader has regard for this principle, and for no lesser principles, the group memvers must trust the leader. Because the leader pays equal attention to everything that happens, there are no prejudices to divide the group into factions. There is unity."

o On Three Leadership Qualities: [133]: "These three qualities are invaluable to the leader: Compassion for all creatures, material simplicity or frugality, and a sense of equality or modesty. A compassionate person acts in behalf of everyone's right to life. Material simplicity gives one an abundance to share. A sense of equality is, paradoxically, one's true greatness."

Whatever the nature and extent of Heider's revisions of the primary text(s) may be, the narrative is nimble and cohesive. The clarity of his prose gives eloquence to Lao Tzu's insights. I am certain that many people who read The Tao of Leadership with an open mind (and heart) will become a more effective leader and, meanwhile, a more fulfilled human being.

Note: John Heider recommends five translations and renditions of Tao Te Ching in his Bibliography. All use the same system of numbering chapters that he uses, facilitating comparisons and contrasts between and among different versions. I presume to add another, the Capstone edition for which Tom Butler-Bowdon wrote the Introduction.
