About the Author
Jerry Robbins, co-founder of the Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air has written and produced over 350 radio plays, including Ticonderoga, Captain Blood, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Gettysburg, Treasure Island, Yankee Clipper, Powder River, and Little Big Horn. In 2006 he started a collaboration with legendary author Ray Bradbury, producing Dandelion Wine, followed by Something Wicked This Way Comes, and wrote the script for, and produced The Halloween Tree; all award winning productions that garnered high praise from the master himself. He is currently working on a fourth collaboration with Mr. Bradbury, a radio dramatization of The Martian Chronicles.

About the Author
Yu-kai Chou is an Author and International Keynote Speaker on Gamification. This book is probably the most important and well researched guide to Gamification that is on the market today. If you think Gamification is about gaming stuff them you are dead wrong. It's about how your brain works and is motivated.

I interviewed Yu-kai for the Business Book Talk Podcast and his understanding and depth of knowledge kept me on the edge of my studio seat for over 45 minutes. This is probably one of the best values on Amazon today if you are a business manager, marketing expert or entrepreneur. I can't wait for his next book.

Fantastic manual.

I don't normally write reviews, but I bought this book and I absolutely adore it.

I am an educator who wanted to try to revitalize his classroom. I had bought a few books about gamification, and "Actionable Gamification" stood out fast and far. The other books I got were vague and not helpful. Chou's book gives evidence, cites sources, and lists tangible ways to gamify any project you might be working on. It reads like a how-to manual, rather than some worthlessly optimistic, airy theoretical text.

Chou begins by explaining that there are 8 useful motivating forces, or reasons anyone does anything at all; which Chou calls "Core Drives." Each chapter after this point focuses specifically on one of these forces, how you can use them to your advantage in your projects, and how, if abused, they can be a detriment to your project. He then lists several techniques for that core drive, wraps up the chapter with a thought exercise and a tie in to his website, and moves on to the next core drive.

The book is incredibly easy to understand, well paced, and fun to read. I am excited to use what I learned in this book to go make lesson plans. :)

The best money I've spent all year so far

I'm still not even all the way through but I've gained so, so much from this book. Yu-kai Chou is the absolute EXPERT on this topic and also has led an interesting life in general. His passion for gamification and how real people can use it emanates from every page, and the Octalysis framework is possibly the most interesting and detailed system I've ever read about, on any topic, ever. (And I studied physics, computer science, and business in college!)

As a marketer, copywriter, and storyteller who has basically "heard it all" in terms of psychological triggers, this book continues to astound me and help me level up (pun intended) my mastery of so many functions of my daily work—creating, selling, publishing, and more. Highly recommended.

Extraordinary pictures light up this tribute to Galileo, telling the story of his discoveries, rise to prominence and excoriation by the Church. Sis (Follow the Dream), an experienced and sophisticated chronicler of history's visionaries, outdoes himself with his illustrations. Detailed and delicate, ingeniously conceived, his paintings convey abstractions with an immediate impact. The artist expresses the simultaneous wonder and prevision of Galileo's celestial observations, for example, in a luminous multipaneled composition: in the center, Galileo trains his telescope on the moon; surrounding panels replicate Galileo's notes about and sketches of the lunar surface. Other paintings take inspiration from contemporaneous maps and treatises; still others borrow historical imagery to convey the loneliness of the censored scientist. Handwritten passages from Galileo's own works embellish the pages and supply information missing from the text. Even with the powerful art, however, this volume does not open up Galileo's story to the uninitiated: the brief text oversimplifies the issues, even for a picture book, and seems to presume the reader's awareness of the historical significance of Galileo's struggles. Grade 1-6?In Follow the Dream (Knopf, 1991), Sis depicted both the humanity and heroism of Christopher Columbus. In Starry Messenger, Sis turns his considerable talents to another infamous Italian?Galileo Galilei. He layers his telling so that young children or groups may focus on the short version printed in large type at the bottom of each page. Older readers will glean more from the quotes pulled from the astronomer's treatise (the work that inspired this title) and other primary sources, such as Inquisition documents. This second layer is printed in script and presented in a variety of decorative patterns (suggesting ideograms) to distinguish it. The sophisticated details of Sis's watercolor, pen, and rubber-stamp illustrations provide yet another dimension as well as ambiance. A master of symbol, the artist creates scenes that focus on the subject?"a boy born with stars in his eyes"?and shows how he shines against the darker aspects of his time. The aging scientist stands alone in a circle of yellow light, suggesting his identification with the heliocentrism for which he was being condemned, surrounded by a sea of red-clad Cardinals. The text is no less powerful: "He was tried in the Pope's court, and everyone could see that the stars had left his eyes." The pathos, the painstaking copies of Galileo's famous sketches of the heavens, and the attention to current scholarship make this book a fascinating find. Badly Bound but otherwise Good

I returned the first copy because text and pictures were bound into the spline of the book. Second copy exactly the same. How could it win a Caldecott prize if it's so poorly bound?! However the pictures and text are beautifully done and we'll just have to forget trying to read/see the parts that are bound into the cover. (not a serious complaint, but annoying nonetheless.)

Enlightening

I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to teach my child about the importance of Galileo's findings and challenging the status quo and I think this book does demonstrate this very well. The dialog is not too overwhelming and so my child doesn't loose attention. The pictures are pretty interesting and have a lot of detail. I try to turn that into a game by finding stuff. The message is clear though so I am pretty pleased. There are a couple parts I tend to skip or adjust but it doesn't hurt the overall message.

About the Author

Guido Giglioni is the Cassamarca Lecturer in Neo-Latin Cultural and Intellectual History at the Warburg Institute, School of Advanced Study, University of London. He has published on Jan Baptiste van Helmont (Immaginazione e malattia, Milan 2000) and Francis Bacon (Francesco Bacone, Rome 2011), and edited a volume on Francis Glisson’s manuscript papers (Cambridge 1996). He has written a number of articles on Renaissance philosophy and medicine, on such authors as Marsilio Ficino, Girolamo Cardano and Tommaso Campanella. He is currently working on Francis Bacon’s philosophy (ERC Starting Grant ‘Francis Bacon and the Medicine of the Mind’).

James A.T. Lancaster is an intellectual historian, who received his PhD from the Warburg Institute in London. He is currently a Teaching Fellow in the Department of History at Royal Holloway, where he is in the process of writing a book on the interrelation of religion and the natural world in the thought of Francis Bacon. In addition, as a board member of the Oxford Francis Bacon (OFB), James has been responsible for compiling the most comprehensive bibliography to date of both editions of the works of, and secondary sources on, Francis Bacon. His publications include: ‘The Semantic Structure of Evolutionary Biology as an Argument Against Intelligent Design’ in Zygon: The Journal of Religion and Science; ‘Natural Knowledge as a Propaedeutic to Self-Betterment: Francis Bacon and the Transformation of Natural History’ in Early Science and Medicine; and ‘Natural Histories of Religion: A (Baconian) “Science”?’ in Perspectives on Science.

Sorana Corneanu is Associate Professor of English (English Department) and researcher in early modern studies (Foundations of Modern Thought Research Centre) at the University of Bucharest. She is the book review editor of the Journal of Early Modern Studies (Zeta Books). In addition to articles on early modern philosophy, literature and intellectual history, she is author of Regimens of the Mind: Boyle, Locke, and the Early Modern Cultura Animi Tradition (University of Chicago Press, 2011) and co-editor, with Guido Giglioni and Dana Jalobeanu, of Francis Bacon and the Medicine of the Mind: Late Renaissance Contexts, special issue of Perspectives on Science 20 (MIT Press, 2012), and Francis Bacon and the Reconfiguration of Early Modern Natural History, special issue of Early Science and Medicine 17 (Brill, 2012).

Dana Jalobeanu is lecturer in Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Bucharest, member of the research centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science CELFIS, and of the research centre Foundations of Early Modern Thought (FEM), University of Bucharest. She is co-editor of the Journal of Early Modern Studies and executive editor of Society and Politics. She has published papers on early modern natural history, laws of nature, the emergence of experimental science, experiments, mathematics and natural philosophy in the works of Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton. She has co-edited (with Peter Anstey), Vanishing Matter and the Laws of Nature: Descartes and Beyond, Routledge: London, 2011, and with Guido Giglioni and Sorana Corneanu two special issues of Early Science and Medicine (2012) and Perspectives on Science (2012).

He runs off into the jungle to find his friends and discovers that elephant, monkey, bear, parrot, and rhino are all too busy taking care of their younger siblings to play with him. Trotting home, he meets his father, who assures him that a new baby "will be good fun." When she arrives, Little Tiger is amazed to find that his new sister is "a tiny copy of himself!" Warnes's bold cartoonlike illustrations are done in vivid greens, blues, and browns. The jungle animals depicted are adorable and lovable. The story is appropriate for reading aloud and is a perfect choice for soon-to-be older siblings. Use it with Lucy Cousins's Za-Za's Baby Brother (1995) or Amy Hest's You're the Boss, Baby Duck (1997, both Candlewick).

The collaborative effort of author Julie Sykes and illustrator Tim Warnes, Little Tiger's Big Surprise! is a brightly colored picture book for young children about the troubles that Little Tiger has when he learns he is going to have a new baby brother or sister. He visits his jungle friends and learns that baby siblings tend to cry and make messes. But worry can be one's worst enemy, and having a sibling is not necessarily as bad as Little Tiger thinks, in this warm-hearted and charming story about adjusting to real-life changes.

A decent read

I had my eye on this book of stories for a little while now, having followed Ari on Thought Catalog and Twitter. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend $3 when I can read a ton of her work for free. The stories were decent enough, and are typical Ari Eastman. All in all, I guess I'm happy to have supported her in this small way.
