Phenomenal

Wow. Just, wow. In short, this is a great read for anyone who wishes to understand the context and culture surrounding the greater African independence movements of the last century.

To be honest, I wasn't too keen on this book at first. I thought it was cumbersome and almost redundant. The more I read, however, I realized that the style which Falola writes is something to be savored. Too often do we read books simply to get to the next word, sentence, page, chapter. Sorry for the corny cliche, but I think it applies here: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts when it comes to this book.

At first, the only parts of the book I enjoyed were the periodical African idioms and sayings. When I finally reached a point to where I could examine the totality of the message, I realized that interspersed in these memoirs is a much deeper understanding of Africa during a time of abrupt transition from a traditional culture to a foreign/forced modern one.

If at first you start to lose interest, keep reading. It's definitely worth it.

Listening to the elders

Growing up in Nigeria in the years around independence provides good material for a personal memoir. These must have been extraordinary times, full of hope and expectation for the emerging new country. For a growing teenager though, the issues were closer to home. Falola, well known scholar of African history, has used his personal experiences to create a rich innovative kind of memoir that combines his growing up during that time with events in his community and the country as a whole. The resulting book gives the reader vivid insight into a complex society with its intricate traditions, in particular those of the Yoruba culture. Falola writes an easy accessible style, often addressing the reader directly. He demonstrates his narrative skill and an ability to impart local events with gracefulness and humour. He demonstrates how the use of proverbs, idioms and traditional imagery has remained part of everyday discourse by interweaving sayings into his narrative. "A proverb is regarded as the 'horse' that carries words to a different level, investing them with meanings...".

Falola's account suggests that he was already at the age of 10 a curious youngster and an astute observer of people, relationships and events. His early fascination with trains led him to experiences beyond his age level that were to influence his standing in his family and community. After an unplanned train ride and its aftermath, that created upheaval in the family, he was transplanted to another branch of his family in a more rural sector of Ibadan, the city-state in Nigeria's south-western region. Not having taken notice of the hierarchical structure of his polygamous family, he realized only then which of his "mothers" is his birth mother. There he also learned to connect with the rich traditions of the local people who have maintained much closer links to their past than those in the urban centre. For example, children are given an additional name by the family, a praise name (oriki). This name should establish a link to a real or imaginary hero of the past. Such names should enhance the young person's deep character and his ambition to emulate the past bearer. Like a young detective he tracks an old woman, different from any he had seen in the neighbourhood. When he is finally confronted by her, the outcomes are an important lesson for his life and future. These early influences shape his thinking into his adult life.

While the chapters stand as independent stories or essays, they flow together easily as a portrait of a person in his time and place. He merges the memories of his childhood with his comprehension of circumstances as an adult. Understanding of his roots and the culture instilled in him led him to study the cultural traditions of the Yoruba people and the history of the land. His reflections on how the two religions, Islam and Christianity managed to co-exist with the rich African traditions are as pertinent today as they were during the sixties. So is his criticism of the trend among the younger generation to denigrate their own culture in the face of western influences. [Friederike Knabe]

Falola's memoir, A Mouth Sweeter Than Salt, is a "must read" for anyone seeking to gain deeper and serious insights into the mind of the true African child. The author gives the reader a breath taking, bird eye view of the cultural panorama of the Yoruba society, and the implications of growing up in its most complicated and sophisticated city of Ibadan. The uniqueness of this book lies in its ability to transcend academic and cultural boundaries. It is as good a history book as it is a novel; social scientists will find it valuable and educators will find it to be of great relavance. It is a story of life and of living. It is indeed a celebration of youth and its rites of passage. Humor, wit, and readability add color and lucidity to all pages of this book. Wild, weird, wide, and even scary at times, this is a memoir that will stand the test of time.

About the Author

Bob Donnelly is a professor at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington Delaware with more than 25 years of teaching experience. He teaches classes in statistics, operations management, management information systems, and database management at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Bob earned an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware, after which he worked for several years as an engineer with the Diamond Shamrock Corporation in a chlorine plant. Despite success in this field, Bob felt drawn to purse a career in education. It was his desire to teach that took him back to school to earn his MBA and Ph.D. in Operations Research, also from the University of Delaware. Bob also teaches in the MBA program at the International School of Management in Paris, France. He thoroughly enjoys discussing research methods and business statistics with both his French and American students.

Bob’s working experience gather prior to his teaching career has provided him with many opportunities to incorporate real-life examples into classroom learning. His students appreciate his knowledge of the business world as well as his mastery of the course subject matter. which isn't an easy subject to learn

Overall, this book helped me to understand the subject of Business Statistics, which isn't an easy subject to learn. The concepts were clear to understand and provided lots of examples as well as opportunities to work problems out on your own. The author of the book has a sense of humor to try to maintain your attention on what could easily be a very dry subject. The book not only provides ways to work problems out on your own on pen and paper, but also shows you how to use excel to do a lot of interesting things that I had no clue about before. Unfortunately, I was unable to use PHStat on my computer, so I may have missed out in some areas.

Tough Read

The writer is funny, which made the material somewhat bearable... However, I took this class online. I found it REALLY difficult to teach myself from this book. I am a 4.0 student and had to work extra hard and use outside resources to digest this material. Studying my butt off and teaching myself I mustered an 89% in the class, luckily the instructor offered a 15 point grading scale...

I also do not like how this book jumps between using PhStat as a plugin in Excel and Excel standing alone. I would have really preferred learning the Excel functions instead of going back and forth between the two.

Easy to read and learn

The concepts ate laid out really well. There is some difficulty due to the use of PHSTAT and Excell rather than the program we actually use in my class (our school uses mini tab most of the time) but it is often easy enough to skip those bits and still get plenty of good information out of the text.

About the Author

Dawn Griffiths started life as a mathematician at a top UK university where she was awarded a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics. She went on to pursue a career in software development, and has over 15 years experience working in the IT industry. Dawn has written several books, including Head First C, Head First Statistics and Head First 2D Geometry.

David Griffiths began programming at age 12, after being inspired by a documentary on the work of Seymour Papert. At age 15 he wrote an implementation of Papert's computer language LOGO. After studying Pure Mathematics at University, he began writing code for computers and magazine articles for humans and he is currently an agile coach with Exoftware in the UK, helping people to create simpler, more valuable software. He spends his free time traveling and time with his lovely wife, Dawn.

Great book. Highly recommended.

I'm almost finished with my second read of this new Head First book. It's an excellent introduction. Like the HF Design Patterns book, there is something about the detailed approach to conveying complex information that really does the job. It's engaging and progresses with those little steps, repeatedly, to drive home essential Android skills. I've been programming in Java for over a year, have taken four OOP courses, including Java, in college, and have read many books on Java and related topics. This works. It is not cartoonish by any means and a great first step; highly detailed, with arrows and explanations that leave no (beginner) stone unturned. Android programming is not that easy, to my surprise. But beware: you better know your Java.

I have purchased close to half a dozen books for learning Android App development.
I would say that *for me* this one fits the best.

I have completed Chapter 6, and I could easily use it as an example to write a simple app for my local animal rescue by replacing drinks with pets. I did find the explanation on page 241 abou the OnItemClickListener to be puzzling. The authors writes that it is a nested class, but even Google's own documention says that it is an interface. I found the explanation at --- programmerinterview.com/index.php/java-questions/java-anonymous-class-example/ --- to be helpful.

I will be editing this review as I continue reading the rest of the book.

I skipped chapter 8 which teaches nested fragments and continued on to chapter 9 which develops a new app.

Because Google has switched over to Material as the new theme, the Action Bar icon pack is no longer available for download at the link mentioned on page 379 of the book.

I was able to find a download link that still worked.
Since Amazon won't let me put a link, I suggest Googling for Android_Design_Icons_20131106.zip

No matter what I did, the ic_action_new_event icon would not appear in the Action Bar.

I had to go to File --> Project Structure.
Then single-click on the entry 'app' in the left-side box under Modules.
Then in the larger middle box, single-click the Dependencies tab.
Then single-click on the entry that has the phrase 'appcompat'; my entire entry was com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3.
After that entry is highlighted, click on the red minus sign on the right-side box.

Android Studio automatically includes the Android Support Library v7 into a new project. Mine does. My Android Studio is 1.2.1.1

After you do this, take note of the last few paragraphs on page 378 in the book.

I found it wasn't necessary to remove com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3 from my project.
Make certain that all the items in menu_main.xml have android:showAsAction instead of app:showAsAction
Android Studio will draw red squiggly lines under each of them.
Ignore those red squiggly lines.
The app will run fine.

Best Android book. Excellent logical from basics to advanced with excellent and relevant examples.
I struggled with a different book for weeks, made more progress with this book in 2 days than with prior book in 4 weeks. Thanks and kudos to the authors.

both my kids are hooked

My kids are Minecraft junkies so when I saw this book I had to order right away. They come running every night before bed for story time now that I have this book. It only took us 3 days reading a few minutes each night to finish the book and now they are hooked. I have ordered a few more and I can see having all of the ones available soon! It kept them both interested and talking about what would happen next. They liked to stop and fill me in on what certain things were because I didn't know. It has been great family reading time and Dr Block is great at what he does. I wish it was a longer book but I am sure there will be more to come so that is OK =) (kids are age 5 and 11)

About the Author

The authors are professors in the elite Masters Program in Financial Engineering at Baruch College, City University of New York, and have vast experience educating students who interview very successfully for quantitative positions (95% employment rate for 2007-2013 Baruch MFE graduates).

Dan Stefanica has been the Director of the Baruch MFE Program since its inception in 2002, and is the author of the best-selling A Primer For The Mathematics Of Financial Engineering and A Linear Algebra Primer for Financial Engineering. He teaches graduate courses on numerical methods for financial engineering, as well as pre-program courses on advanced calculus and numerical linear algebra with financial applications. His research spans numerical analysis, graph theory, and geophysical fluid dynamics. He has a PhD in mathematics from New York University and taught previously at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Rados Radoicic has been on the faculty of the Baruch MFE Program since 2006, teaching graduate courses on financial instruments, econometrics, and statistics, as well as pre-program courses on advanced calculus with financial applications. He has done extensive research in discrete and computational geometry, extremal combinatorics, and graph theory. He has a BS and a PhD in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Tai-Ho Wang has been on the faculty of the Baruch MFE Program since 2008, teaching graduate courses on stochastic processes and optimization methods, as well as pre-program courses in probability. His research spans fields as varied as quantitative finance, statistics, and Riemannian geometry. He has a PhD in applied mathematics from National Chiao Tung University.

A wonderful little book!

This is a wonderful little book! It fits in your pocket, so you can easily carry it with you and study it even during a crowded subway ride.
After a warm-up chapter, all questions presented in the book are just stated in a long list, with no accompanying solution after each question. So there is no temptation to immediately read the answer if you get stuck. This is a very thoughtful editorial choice and it fits very well with the aim of the book to train you for interviews.
Subsequent chapters provide detailed solutions to each question. Topics covered are: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Financial Instruments, C++ and Data structure, Monte Carlo and Numerical methods, Probability and Stochastic Calculus, Brain Teasers. The selection of topics fits very well with the kind of questions you will be likely to encounter. And the choice of questions for each topic is well balanced.
Study this book and you will have a pretty good idea of what to expect during quant interviews.
