Patrick W. Galbraith has a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo, Japan and is currently pursuing a second Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at Duke University, USA. Welcome to the origin story of otaku

Like prequel movies or prequel TV series, Debating Otaku Culture in Contemporary Japan takes a look back into the young but complex history of otaku in a quest to answer the question "Just how did this whole otaku thing get started, and just what exactly constitutes an otaku?" As a collection of academic essays, the book does not definitely answer this question, but rather quite effectively and eloquently opens it up for debate. Taking an approach of taking absolutely nothing for granted, the book tears down all the reductionism and selective amnesia that dogs the history and definition of otaku and invites us to take a critical look at the facts, and to reach our own conclusions and theories based on them.

Patrick Galbraith and his team have done a thoroughly impressive job of putting together essays that really tell the story of how 'otaku' has been applied differently through different times, starting with the first use of the word in 1983 by Nakamori Akio in a small bishoujo magazine of the time called Manga Burikko. After its first use, the term has had quite the turbulent ride, as it has been transformed by events such as:

- the Miyazaki Tsutomu kidnappings and ensuing debate,
- the rise of Okada Toshio to prominence in the otaku discourse (with special attention given by the book to Okada Toshio's anime Otaku no Video),
- the political manipulation of the otaku image in order to promote the Cool Japan campaign,
- the massive popularity of Densha Otoko and the transformation of Akihabara, and
- the contemporary otaku discourse as exemplified by figures such as Azuma Hiroki and Murakami Takashi.

The "take nothing for granted attitude" is made crystal clear from the very beginning of the book. In his unorthodox foreword, Outsuka Eiji (a key figure in introducing current anime aesthetics, and editor at Manga Burikko during Nakamori's time) basically states that what is called the "otaku discourse" is just a joke that he and others in the 80's made up but was somehow taken seriously by others, including the other authors in this book. He outright states that he doesn't believe in this whole otaku discourse nonsense and that the meaning behind 'otaku' is much more mundane in nature with roots in the failed leftist movements of Japan in the 1960s, and asks the reader to not buy too closely into what the rest of the authors in the book have to say about otaku discourse. The off-beat, "let me start by telling the reader that they're interested in something meaningless" foreword is absolutely perfect to introduce the surprising tensions that exist in understanding and defining 'otaku'.

The essays are all well-researched, well-paced, high-quality incisive looks into the definition of 'otaku' that achieve the goal of debunking commonly-held (mis)conceptions and inviting a new kind of conversation.

As for required reading prior to the book, I think the book can be thoroughly enjoyed on its own, but to get the most out of the experience, I would recommend having read Galbraith's other works "The Otaku Encyclopedia" and "The Moé Manifesto", as well as Azuma Hiroki's "Otaku: Japan's Database Animals". Azuma's work is frequently cited throughout Debating Otaku (often in a critical context), and having read the book certainly helps understand why the authors take such issue with it--it's also a great book in its own regard, in my humble opinion. Galbraith's previous work is also wonderful in the academic sense, but amusingly, it also brings (in my mind) a little bit of drama to the otaku discourse in the form of Galbraith's seemingly complicated relationship with Okada Toshio's views on otaku.

Reading Galbraith's books in a sequence reveals a story where once starry-eyed, idealistic otaku Galbraith finally meets his otaku idol Okada Toshio only to discover Okada hates everything that Galbraith's generation of otaku represents (The Otaku Enyclopedia). Galbraith then rebels against his idol by embracing everything Okada hates (The Moé Manifesto), until finally we see Galbraith coming to terms with the differences in ideologies between them, and accepting some of Okada's ideas while preserving his deep admiration for him (Debating Otaku). It strikes me as meaningful that most essays in the book have no introduction, except Okada Toshio's essays which all have an introduction by Galbraith. I'm sure the actual story is nowhere as dramatic as this, but the otaku in me likes to imagine otherwise.

In closing, for readers interested in a deep, academic look into the otaku discourse, Debating Otaku in Contemporary Japan is well worth the price of admission. Buy it now, and join the discussion of just what does it mean to be an otaku. Five stars.

Highly recommended!

I was lucky enough to get access to this book early through my university library, so I am happily able to post this review on the date of first availability here on Amazon.

If you are part of its intended audience, this book will be like a series of lightning bolts as you read it. While not 100% pure gold - there are a couple essays that are slightly opaque or feel slightly out of place due to their overly statistical bent - it really is filled with fantastic material on the whole.

The price tag on this is kind of bizarrely steep, but there is enough value in here to make it worth recommending that you request your local library purchase a copy.

Here's who I would define as some members of the intended audience:

- anyone who has read and enjoyed any issues of the journal "Mechademia"
- anyone who has read and gotten value from other things published by the principal authors and editors of this book
- anyone who has read and experienced benefit from any academic studies of manga, anime and gaming culture in Japan
- anyone who has longed for English translations of Gainax co-founder and "Otaking" Okada Toshio's writing on this subject
- any well-educated anime/manga fan who goes to conventions mainly for panel presentations, because you just love learning more about this stuff

The essays in this book are extremely well chosen for the purpose of providing a thorough cross section of - as the title implies - the /debate/ about the otaku subculture that has evolved through the years since 1983 when the term otaku first came into popular usage.

The authors consistently display an impressive awareness regarding the overall project of the book to interrogate and problematize the varied aspects of otaku subculture, rather than attempt to provide what less skilled and confident authors might attempt to pass off as the capital "A" Answers to all the questions that have arisen over the decades.

It also provides rather massive reference lists to help the interested reader find more material for further study in this area.

In short, for students of Japanese popular culture, specifically around manga, anime and gaming, this book has my highest recommendation as it sheds a great deal of clarifying light on a subject that is widely misunderstood and somewhat difficult to grasp in its complexity.

In closing, I want to add that as I myself do research specifically on the historical, maybe I could even say "ancestral", background of the Evangelion series, I would be happy to connect with students and authors with similar interests through the comments below.

A "slapstick" novel of manners?

Could there be such a thing as a "slapstick" novel of manners? This one might qualify, for its humour both witty and broad and its country-house setting.
Our highly-educated heroine Flora Poste, intelligent, witty, but fashion-addled, aimless, and seemingly shallow, descends on her rural relatives when her parents die leaving her penniless. Sharp parodies of rural England, the family includes, among others, an insane matriarch locked in her room, a love-mad and graceless granddaughter, a grandson who plays the same role among the maids that the bull does among the cows, an antique manservant who fails to notice when a cow's leg falls off. In short order Flora contrives to marry off the granddaughter to a local grandee, packs the grandson off to Hollywood, and generally manages things so craftily that everyone not only lives Happily Ever After but also does so with Good Manners and better haircuts.
The most winning feature of Gibbon's book (after the fact that it is hysterically funny) is that she skewers not only the conventions of the 1930s upper classes to which Flora belongs, but also the working class denizens of the farm. At first everyone seems faintly ridiculous but over time your affections for ALL these characters grows. By the end you are actually happy to see them all happily settled, and Flora no longer seems like a conniver but a clever and sympathetic heroine-more Elizabeth Bennet than Becky Sharpe. A very neat trick on the part of the author, and one well worth the discovering.
One miniscule note of caution: Gibbons, writing in the 1930s, sets her novel "in the near future," and adds a couple of futuristic features that confuse the casual reader-telephones with televisions in them so you can see the speaker, references to the "Anglo-Nicaraguan War" and the like. You may safely ignore them without diminishing the book.

Enjoyable - but not the original text

I read the book as part of a book club. We all found it amusing and entertaining. Be warned - this is not the same text as originally published. I ordered this edition because it would ship sooner than others which appeared higher on the sort list. While the story arc is the same, and the characters as quirky, it became apparent that my version misses a lot of the descriptive prose my friend all read. Skip this edition and get the full deal.

Satirical, Sardonic look at the English Novel in Cold Comfort Farm

Every now and then, usually when life gets a bit too stressful, I need a good belly laugh. And if an author can do it in a clever fashion, then all the better. Such was the case with Stella Gibbon's Cold Comfort Farm.

Written in 1932, and set in "the near future," it's the story of the Starkadder family and what happens when they have a run in with the determined Flora Poste. Flora is one of those heroines who is decidedly cheerful, and very intent on fixing up other peoples messes and untidiness. Forced with the decision to either throw herself on the mercy of some relations goodwill to take her in, or (horrors!) get a job, Flora writes to the various relations that she has in search of a home after the demise of her parents. In exchange, Flora will hand over her slight inheritance of a hundred pounds a year.

And it seems the only relations who do want her are the Starkadders, off in the downs of Sussex. Flora is imagining a tidy home farm. What she gets is a set of cranky, eccentric if not outright insane, cousins, with the ringleader, Aunt Ada Doom in the middle of it all. There is the son of Ada, Amos Starkadder, who runs the farm, but spends Tuesday nights off preaching fire and brimstone to the Brethren; his wife Judith who worships her youngest and views the world as perpetual misery and just wishes that everyone would leave her alone. Pretty Elfine, all of seventeen, spends her days running wild and imagining herself a dryad, twigs and leaves included. And then there are the boys, most notably, Reuben, who loves farming, but Amos doesn't trust him, and Seth, an oversexed, hunk of manhood who seems to have nothing but sex on the brain, but the reality is much more interesting. And then the ancient, muttering Adam, who 'cletters' the dishes with thorny twigs.

In short, Flora has all sorts of interesting projects at hand, and it's a task that she falls to with glee with great practicality and not a little cunning on her part. It's a mad riot of a novel, generously slathered with wicked parodies of the overwrought prose of D.H. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy, asides to the writing of Gaskell and a great withering jab at the Brontes. For anyone who has survived a university level course in nineteenth century English lit, it's the perfect antidote to the general depression that follows such a course, and it's worth it.

Asute readers will note that Flora blithely goes about her mission of improving everyone's lives and being a dreadful snob about it. It takes a little while to realize that Gibbons is making fun of her heroine just as much as she is of the popular novels of the time. Flora never quite seems to see the chaos that she is spreading about in her wake as she goes about her tidying, and assumes that she is 'doing the right thing.'

From the names of the farm's herd of cows -- Aimless, Feckless, Graceless and Pointless and the stud bull, Big Business -- to the real intent and mystery of Aunt Ada, who saw something nasty in the woodshed, it's a grand read of a book. You'll find yourself giggling over the descriptions, the sly wit, and the oft-times ridiculous situations that arise in this tale of a tormented family. I enjoyed myself immensely, and found it vastly entertaining and worth it to mend the blues for an evening.

It's not a very long book, just under 240 pages, and if you can, find the new release from Penguin Books, with a new introduction by Lynne Truss, and a delightful cover by artist Roz Chast. There have been several film versions of this one made, most notably with Kate Beckensale as Flora, and I urge anyone who hasn't read the book to do so. You'll never look at English Literature in quite the same way again.

Absolutely wonderful for practice purposes. The recordings are very professional and high quality, however, being a recording they lack room for personal interpretation. That is very important when considering this item because you don't ever what to become mechanical in your performances which can happen when practicing with a CD.

Sadly this book excuses the tyranny of forced circumcision

The book has originality in both capturing the culture of food court workers and the genital mutilation of a teenage boy Frankly, I had trouble following the choppy plot. I felt like I was reading one of those stories where there were blank spaces of missing words that had to be filled in.
The writer abruptly ended scenes without finishing the story, such as the despicable circumcision scene. As an adamant anti-circumcision activist, I was troubled by the light-heartedness about the issue of foreskin amputation. It is thoughtless how someone lucky enough to escape the knife should be treated as a pariah or a freak, as in 'Pubes' case. The mother's insistence on the circumcision is the tragedy of the story, while Ralph, the father, relented with too little of a fight. Being intact is more and more common, and I hope this book does not promote the idea that circumcision is something that has to be done eventually. That premise is totally wrong. I would have like the author to have spent more time on the negatives of circumcision and that it violates medical ethics, human rights and the sovereignty we all have over our bodies.

It's a sad commentary on what one boy does to try and "fit in". He is body shamed by his society for being intact and feels that the only way to deal with his natural body is to skin his penis. Kind of disturbing and sad.

Sorry, but I did not like this novel at all. I couldn't connect to the characters, I felt like there were too many different things going on, and I had to force myself to finish it. I was expecting a light hearted comedy, but I didn't get that at all.

Awesome reading book

I bought this book for my 6 year old daughter who is in the first grade. She works very independently using this book. The instrustions are kids friendly, so they don't need to much help from us parents. This book reinforces some of the stuff your child already knows and builds on them , while pushing your child forward in the right direction. My daughter has learn so much from using this book. I just love love this book because it does what it supposed to do which is help my child read.

This book consists of these exercises: Short vowels, long vowels ,Consonant Combinations, Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. Your child will be matching pictures to the correct words, completing rhyming phrases, connecting words to the correct picture, writing words with the same ending and circling words that matches the picture. The reading consist of several short passages, which your child will read and then answer several questions about what they just read. Overall this is a great book for kids to work on their own and then use the answer sheet to the back of the book to correct their own mistakes. I highly recommend this book to home schoolers or to reinforced what child is learning in school.

My daughter has progressed very well using this as part of her home-school curriculum. We are very glad that Kumon has these workbooks available for us to use. They are a great resource for us. We also use Kumon Word Problems and Geometry & Measurement for math and recommend it as well.

Excellent book for 5 year old learning to read. My daughter started to read some 3 letter words within 2 days of starting this book. This book gives parents motivation to teach reading . I am glad for this purchase.

Best book for Transaction Manangement & Concurrency Control

The Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database Systems, by Bernstein, Hadzilacos and Goodman is the jewel for the Theory of Transaction Management and Concurrency Control in Database Systems. Despite of the fact that it is out of print (the last edition going back to 1987), it is still consider up to date and the best source for important aspects of the implementation of the transaction manager of a DBMS such as: - Transaction design -- query formulation, isolation, degree desired, and transaction length - Serializabilty -- criterion for serializability, serialization graph, serialization order - Atomicity -- avoiding dirty reads, repeatable reads, phantom reads - Concurrency control -- two phase locking, resource & data contention, thrashing, detect deadlocks, intention locks, deadlock avoidance protocols, other concurrency control mechanisms - Recovery -- tolerating failures and guaranteeing atomicity, quantitative conclusions
Again, I would recommend this textbook to anyone who interests in the theory of Database Systems in general and at the Theory of Transaction Management in particular.

The seminal text on concurrency control

This book is outstanding. It is THE text to have for a study and understanding of database concurrency control algorithms and the concepts of concurrency control. In my work and writings, I always refer to this text and its precisely-defined properties for proper concurrency control (recoverable (RC), avoidance of cascading aborts (ACA), serializable (SR), and strict (ST)) in lieu of the more-often-cited but less precise "ACID" criteria.

Useful and intuitive

It is a very useful book and also simple and intuitive. As a Java developer I often read about transactions, but it is hard to understand what that means. Java books are usually vague and unclear on database transactions, even though transactions are one of the key part of Java EE. It is disheartening to read how important is something the author does not understand himself. Finally, I started reading about databases, and that helped. This book helped me to understand what all that transactional stuff really mean.
