LAWRENCE HARTE is the president of APDG, a provider of expert information to the telecommunications market.

Mr. Harte has over 23 years of experience in the electronics industry, including company leadership, product management, development, marketing, design, and testing of telecommunications (cellular), radar, and microwave systems. He has been issued patents relating to cellular technology. He has authored over 75 articles on related subjects and has been a speaker and panel moderator at industry trade events.

Mr. Harte earned an executive MBA at Wake Forest University and received his B.A. from the University of the State of New York. During the TDMA digital cellular standard development process, Mr. Harte served as an editor and voting company representative for the Telecommunications Industries Association (TIA) TR45.3., digital cellular standards committee.

As of 2001, Mr. Harte has authored and co-authored over 20 books relating to telecommunications technology. He has served as a consultant and expert witness for leading companies including Ericsson, Siemens, VLSI, AMD, Casio, Samsung, Sony, ATT, Nokia, Hughes, and many others.

RICHARD LEVINE is the founder and principal engineer of Beta Scientific Laboratory and is also Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University. He is active as a technology consultant to many firms developing new cellular and PCS systems and products used in Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Israel, Korea, Mexico, and the United States.

Mr. Kitka has influenced several cellular mobile, transportable, and portable phone model designs, features, and functionality. Randomly ordered bluetooth specs

I'm glad the book exists because it does break down the myriad bluetooth specs into bite-sized chunks. I wish the book didn't copy and paste from the specs one paragraph at a time. The ordering of the various descriptions doesn't seem logical. They jump all over the place from circuit ids to piconets to how inquiry works via channel hopping. If you use the book as a reference to refer to acronyms and specific parts of the specifications, it works. Even then, contents are strewn across multiple sections.

Currently I am still working on the "Introduction to Bluetooth" 2nd edition book. So far I have found the material both interesting and useful. There are, however, some complex ideas and techniques that I hope to be able to understand with further reading and study. I like the book and look forward to what progress may await me..

About the Author
Hanna Segal was born in Poland in August 1918 and studied medicine in Warsaw and Paris before qualifying at the Polish Medical School in Edinburgh in 1943. She became a psychoanalyst four years later, having trained under Melanie Klein, with Paula Heimann and Joan Riviere as her first supervisors. Dr Segal then qualified in child analysis and afterwards became a training analyst in the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1951-52. She also served as President of the British Society and Vice-President of the International Psychoanalytical Association. She was a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatry, and was also Visiting Professor of the Freud Memorial Chair, University College, London. Her publications include 'Klein' (1979), 'The Work of Hanna Segal' (1981), 'Introduction to the Work of Melanie Klein' (1988) and 'Dream, Phantasy and Art' (1990).

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt!

This is one of those warm-and-fuzzy feel good books. Why? Because once you understand the concepts and core principles of Profit First, you realize that perhaps you weren't doing it right. Then you realize that from this very moment forward (or at least the moment you finish Chapter 4 - "Choose Your Own Adventure") that you most certainly can attain financial freedom. You'll stop working like a slave to your business, and you'll feel better working with your customers.

I actually picked up the hardback version first (because I love making notes) and then got turned onto the Audible.com version, which is narrated by and includes extra commentary by the author, Mike Michalowicz. If you've never heard Mike speak, he has tremendous energy and sincerity that meshes quite well with his own brand of humor. It can be useful to follow along while he reads, making notes along the way. I did the same with one of his other books, The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field.

Following Mike for the past three years, I've known about the Profit First system for a while. I implemented a half-arse version of it late last year, surprising with success. Why? Because I (unknowingly) used the concept of 'removing temptation' by keeping my Profit account hidden from my other accounts. I can't lie, I have some bias (and love) for Profit First because it worked. I also befriended Mike over a beer on the rooftop of the CreativeLive San Francisco studio, which in turn led to me being able to preview this book.

Why am I telling you this? Simple. Three months ago I learned the other pieces of the jigsaw puzzle while reading it. I put Profit First to work for real, and I've seen nothing but positives in my business and personal finances (yes, it works there too - and is discussed in the latter part of the book). For the first time in five years, I made a quarterly tax payment, on time. And I did it without sweating bullets, crapping my pants, and trying to figure out where the money would come from. I couldn't review this book any other way than positively... especially since I've been involved in one way or another for the entire process of creating the book from concept testing - I read earlier articles about Profit First in the Wall Street Journal and on Mike's blog, in his 2nd book The Pumpkin Plan, and was there in the CreativeLive studios when the concept literally exploded in the brains of hundreds (or possibly thousands) of live, online business owners participating in the 2-day live Pumpkin Plan Workshop recording. (It's still available for purchase, but even better Mike will be back again at CL for Profit First in August!).

When I started my business 5 years ago, I spent A LOT of money on business books about how to be a consultant, how to launch a startup, how to run a green business, how to become your business brand... and most of them are still unread because they're just too much information and overwhelming even to read.

I can honestly say I don't think I bought ANY books on small business accounting or how to be profitable... I just believed the rule of thumb (that may have been true at the time but isn't anymore) - plan on 3-5 years before your startup business is profitable.

So for my accounting, I just did the best I could, and tried to make sure I could pay my bills when business was lean, and was able to spend more when my business was flush, happily tricking myself into believing I was running a "profitable", healthy business, that from the outside looked like it was growing. But I was in denial.

Most of the time, when people are in denial about something so sensitive as their business or money, the process of resolving the irrational fears and embracing REALITY is a personal process that can be extremely painful (impacting personal lives), and takes a long time to rehabilitate both the business and owner, to get to the good times.

The good thing about Profit First is that it's like the first time you visit the pain-free dentist and he really IS!

When you read this book, you'll see that becoming permanently profitable in business is as simple and easy as making the change in your brain to manage your business and $$ allocations by taking your profit FIRST, and budgeting for expenses LAST, after you've already allocated salaries & taxes.

Mike delivers the message in an easy to read, entertaining way, with lots of personal stories shared (including my own, about the moment I realized I'd been fooling myself all these years, a slave to my business). Within just a few hours of reading, I am sure you'll have the entire simple concept and system and be ready to become profitable today!

I sincerely hope you'll pick up a copy for yourself and one for every entrepreneur (and accountant!) who you care about.

You won't Profit First until you read this!

I have been a fan of the author Mike Michalowicz, author of The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, and most recently, The Pumpkin Plan. Mike is the quintessential entrepreneur and his first two books for have been a true inspiration for me as I navigate the often turbulent waters of small business ownership. I am not complaining, when I opened my latest company in the summer of 2009, arguably the WORST time for a start-up (especially if you wanted any bank financing), Mike's Toilet Paper Entrepreneur was the inspiration to keep me trudging along, "paycheckless", getting up every morning with a smile on my face knowing that I was building something.
Then came The Pumpkin Plan. Just what my business needed after struggling through the worst economy in decades and waking up to realize that the doors were still open and the lights were still on. Through that book I learned the art of nurturing your best customers and releasing the worst. A valuable concept that I certainly should have been able to figure out myself. . .but I didn't. Mike did, and I followed his formula and my business is now much better because of it.
My problem is, I am an entrepreneur. I'm not an accountant, I'm not a banker. I'm an entrepreneur. When I saw Michael come out with his latest book called Profit First I thought. .WHATTTT??? Profit first. How novel! I had another "ahh haa" moment; Why didn't I think of that. Well, once again, after getting a complimentary first 5 chapters, I can say "Don't miss this one!" I think Mike has outdone himself this time. He not only talks about accounting in a language that non-accountant can understand, but he makes me want to give this book to MY accountant and say. . "Learn this!" "Help me make this happen for me!"
Do don't waste your time hemming and hawing over whether or not to get this book. There are tons of business books on the market and I have read most. This book is well worth your investment of the minimal cost and the time you will spend enjoying it! If you are an entrepreneur, or THINK you are, then this is a MUST READ. My favorite thing is "MIKE ISN'T TRYING TO UPSELL YOU ANYTHING! So many authors give you just enough information to get you to buy their "plan." Not Mike. This is the real deal! In fact, you would do your fellow entrepreneurs a HUGE favor by purchasing a copy for them as a gift! They will thank you a 100 times over! Happy reading, and happy profit!

About the Author

Professor Medeni Maskan is currently a professor at the University of Gaziantep, Engineering Faculty, Food Engineering Department. He received a B.Sc. degree in Food Engineering from Middle East Technical University in 1988. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Food Engineering from Gaziantep University in 1992 and 1997, respectively. He worked on the storage stability of pistachio nuts at various atmospheric conditions problem during his Ph.D. studies. Dr. Maskan has been a faculty member since 1998, and became a full professor in 2007. He has published more than 70 articles in national and international top class journals. His research program focuses on fats and oils, dehydration of food materials, and extrusion technology. He acts as a reviewer in several journals being published in the food science and technology area. Professor Maskan lives in Gaziantep, Turkey with his wife, Aysun, and their two children, Serhat and Ozan Emre.

Dr. Aylin Altan is an assistant professor of Food Engineering at the University of Mersin, Turkey. Dr. Altan received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Food Engineering at the University of Gaziantep, Turkey, in 2000 and 2003, respectively. She received her Ph.D. degree in Food Engineering in 2008 from the University of Gaziantep in Turkey, focusing on the extrusion process under a collaborative research with the University of California, Davis. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Davis, from 2009 to 2010. She joined the faculty of Food Engineering at the University of Mersin in 2010. Dr. Altan is the author of 13 research papers in refereed scientific journals, 2 book chapters, and more than 20 conference presentations. She is the recipient of the third-place poster award in the Second International Congress on Food and Nutrition in 2007, best poster award in ICC International Conference in 2008, and a finalist in IFT’s Food Engineering Division Graduate Paper Competition in 2008. She is a member of IFT. Her current research interests include processing of food materials into value-added products, modeling and optimization of food processing, utilization of agricultural processing by-products, and noninvasive imaging of food microstructure.

Dense, but with an informative theoretical basis.

This textbook was prescribed by my university (University of Cape Town) as part of an undergraduate Public Policy and Administration course. I find Hill's prose dense and lengthy, and his manner of writing has many conditional clauses, making the details hard to follow. He does have a knowledgeable take on the subject however, and the overall message is informative. His perspective is British, and he uses theoretical analyses appropriately to frame the examples he gives. This book is best read linearly, as reference to earlier concepts are often made.

Really indispensable

This book is truly pocket-sized(3.5" x 5.5"). You can refer to it stealthily, without carrying a big map that proclaims "I'm a tourist". It is sturdily bound with a plastic, not paper, cover that holds up to years of use. I first saw it when I stopped to ask directions of a policeman in Paris, and he pulled it from his pocket to find the street I was looking for. That was all the endorsement I needed, and I bought one soon after. I have used it for 4 or 5 years.
The book includes a general plan of the city with subways and bus lines shown on separate maps, an alphabetical index and grid reference for every street in the city. Following the index are 20 maps, one for each arrondissement. Warning: The print on these maps is small and can be hard to read except when the light is strong. That's why I gave this otherwise excellent book 4 instead of 5 stars.There is also an excellent section of maps and indexes for the city's major suburbs.
The last section of the book includes complete listings with addresses and phone numbers of police stations, fire houses, government offices, embassies, post offices, hospitals,churches, monuments, museums, even parking lots.
This is good value for the money. Your $25 investment will last a long time. If you love Paris, or just have to do business there, you'll love this book.

The Absolute Best Guide to Paris

This book is so good it's amazing that other guides are still being manufactured. I spent a great deal of time in Paris and this book was absolutely indispensable. On the inside covers are maps of the Metro system and the greater-Paris area RER (train) system, so you can peek in the book while you're on the metro or train without looking like a confused tourist. The book itself has an index of all Paris streets and major buildings, which leads you to a section of maps broken down "par arrondissement" (by district). The book is compact enough to fit in a small purse (and is sturdily bound so you can toss it in), but contains a wealth of information. To top it off, the color scheme is attractive and the typesetting is top-notch. This guide is the ultimate - it's useful when you're there, it'll be beautiful on a bookshelf when you come home. If you buy a fold-out map or something other than this guide, you'll regret it.

Why pay $35 for this?

This book is excellent - but before you order it, please know you can find it everywhere (i.e., bookstores, tobacs, souvenir shops along the Seine, etc.) in Paris for 7 Euros (about $9 US). Why pay $35? Well, if you want to look up information in it before your trip, maybe it's worth it.

I just returned from Paris and replaced my old copy which didn't have newer attractions such as Musee Branly and Velib stations. My new copy is a gorgeous red, and includes translations in English, Spanish, Italian, and Russian of key sections: the summary contents page and the famous monuments descriptions. If you buy it in Paris, you can look at the various versions, which have slight differences such as which languages and supplementary material are included, and also choose the color you want.

About the Author

David Hendy is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Professor of Media and Communications at the University of Sussex. He has been a visiting research fellow at the University of Cambridge; Yale University; and Indiana University, Bloomington. He worked as a journalist and producer at the BBC, and in 2011 was awarded the James W. Carey Award for Outstanding Journalism by the Media Ecology Association of North America for his five-part BBC Radio 3 series, Rewiring the Mind. His book Life on Air: A History of Radio Four won the Longman-History Today Book of the Year Award.

Not much of a noise

This is an ok book, but nothing special. It is based on a British Radio Four series, which may have been more interesting. There are a number of interesting anecdotes and facts, but overall it is quite superficial. There is nothing here about animals or the natural world, only humans. It isn't really about "sound" versus "noise", or foundational discussions of the nature of sound, hearing, etc. -- chapters are more or less catch alls about topics like rhetoric in the ancient world, songs of the French Revolution, the back staircases in the Old Town of Edinburgh, etc. Sound is an excuse to discuss these topics. The most interesting chapters are the first and second about prehistoric humans and cave sounds and burial sites (the echoes as spirit evokers). The last chapters are, as one might expect, on the increases in noise in the modern era, but there is really nothing about (for instance) Murray Schafer's views on low and hi fi or Marshall Mcluhan/Edmund Carpenter on changes in acoustic space. He does mention Bernie Krause's work.

The author actually doesn't seem to mind the proliferation of noise/sound all that much: he has a vague exhortation in the conclusion to us to stop being elitist, stop hiding out in quiet places, put down our reading (not including his book, I guess), and listen to the iPod of the person driving us crazy beside us on the bus or to the blasts from the rooms of the annoying neighbour next door -- our problem (according to him) is not that the world is getting too noisy, but that we are prejudiced against uncontrolled sounds bleeding into our ears from all around us. I'm not making this up.

Anyway, every once in a while there is just an error (the index has problems, e.g. the not very interesting reference to John Cage is misindexed); and in one place there is a discussion of the confessional in the middle ages, when it is reasonably well known that the confessional as we know it is a 16th century invention.

The book is well written, amusing in spots, but overall disappointing.

A gift for persons (like me) with little understanding of the importance of hearing and listening

I ordered this looking for help in dealing with age related hearing loss and listening imparement. WOW! I started reading when it arrived and could not put it down. A page turner, filled with wonderful research and history, and insights about "noise" that never occured to me. I'm giving copies of this to a number of close friends as Christmas Gifts!

The history of noise, the anthropology of ghosts and other illusive things

Writing about the history of noise is like mapping the afterlife or studying the anthropology of ghosts, entirely speculative and seeking to impose a sense of order on the random, and a sense of the physical on the purely ethereal. It is also entirely dependent upon how one chooses to define noise. To me, noise seems unintentional, a byproduct; the author uses a much broader definition that includes intentional noise-making such as music, chanting, prayer, church bells and more. As such, the book might more aptly be called “Sound.”

That broad-brush approach coupled with a narrow (but fascinating) field of examples to illustrate our shared experience with noise may explain my mixed response to the book. I enjoyed it, but it was not at all what I expected, which was an exploration of how we define, process and interact with noise, possibly with neurologic and biologic insights into how it shapes individual and social responses. Instead, the book takes more of a generalist approach, with the author discussing various stages in social evolution and how those humans might have experienced and interacted with certain sounds, and the power dynamics of those who generate noise, those who receive it, and efforts to control both sides of that equation.

It’s an interesting, but understandably subjective approach that moves from the earliest days of pre-literate society, through the Industrial Revolution and ends in the current era of earbuds and YouTube and constant stimulation. It’s filled with some truly memorable moments of discovery (such as how Neolithic paintings in caves occur the most in areas with the highest sonic interest, for example), but the heavy reliance on “surely,” “perhaps,” “maybe” and “it’s likely,” made it maddeningly speculative.

Still, he is a talented writer and a topnotch historian. I was struck most by the care he brought to the epilogue in sections such as this: “If noise is, as most definitions would have it, an ‘unwanted’ sound, then to understand its impact on lived experience properly, we need to work out who exactly considered a given sound as wanted and who exactly considered it unwanted in any particular time and place – and why … the answer to these questions seems to keep coming back to a potent mix of three interwoven things: power, control and anxiety.

That’s a powerful thesis introduced only at the end and I would have loved to have seen this more explicitly "sounded" out from the beginning. Still, I enjoyed the read and even purchased a Tibetan singing bowl after reading the section about the religious application of sounds, specifically bells, to experience it firsthand.
