I use this text for teaching Physiology to first-year medical students, and have found it to be an excellent resource. It employs a clear, systematic approach to the topic that nicely integrates basic science and clinical applications. Student satisfaction ratings for the textbook have been very high.

The texts of the poems are copiously annotated and the lines of poetry conveniently numbered for easy reference. A special section, Juvenilia and Early Responses, offers easy access to work by the young Tennyson, not readily available elsewhere, together with responses from his contemporaries.

Criticism includes significant statements on Tennyson as well as interpretations of the major poems. A special feature is Georg Roppen's essay on Tennyson and the theory of evolution. Robert W. Hill, Jr. is Professor of English at Middlebury College. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard and was the recipient of a John Harvard honorary scholarship. He has taught previously at Harvard and at Amherst.

Editorial qualms

As editor of this collection, Robert W. Hill has, I feel, made some rather poor choices. For instance, in the Preface he audaciously writes that he removed "indisputably 'bad'" poems. In this capacity, he omitted "Godiva" -- a great loss -- as well as many charming short verses, well represented in other collections.

Additionally, although he claims deliberately not to have modernized Tennyson's spelling, he nevertheless Americanizes both spelling and punctuation (e.g. "honor" instead of "honour"; consistent placement of the full stop within quotation marks; and so on). This badly affects the very Englishness of Tennyson's voice, I should think.

I would recommend the edition for its highly informed annotations, but not as a source for the poems themselves.

Sloppy editing

Do not buy this book. I adopted it as a text book for a course I am teaching but have found typos in just about every poem I have read in it. Some you can figure out:
"How sweet--while warn airs lull us, blowling lowly"
"Warn" is supposed to be "warm." But others are really confusing:
"Thro' many a women acanthus-wreath divine!"
"Women" is supposed to be "woven." I checked these in the first edition of the Norton Critical--the first edition has the correct lines. I guess Norton just scanned the first edition and put it on the shelves as a second "edition" without even editing it.
Very sloppy work--please don't buy the book. The texts are well selected--it is nice to have The Princess available. And the critical readings are also well chosen. But the texts are hardly readible.

Fabulous well written book that can build a deeper understanding of undocumented immigration

I'm teaching this book in an introductory college class with fantastic results. It combines compelling personal stories of 10 undocumented immigrants with great historical and public policy discussions that helps my students understand the history of interconnections between Mexico and the US, the complex reasons people migrate and the effects of US immigration policies. It addresses one of the most contentious debates in America with the fairness, dignity and complexity it deserves. I would strongly recommend it for a range of classes -- It would work in introductory anthropology, ethnic studies, urban studies courses as well as in other courses that explore globalization, immigration and public policy. It's accessible enough for introductory students but not at all over-simplified. A perfect mix.

Coherent, Well-Researched Account and Analysis of a Group of Very Interesting People

I had this book assigned for a class, but once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I even stayed up very very late to finish. The book follows a group of of normal guys and tells their stories as people without papers. It doesn't try to demonize or canonize them as saints. It only shows them as human beings trying to adapt and survive in a unique situation. Furthermore, there is no unnecessary victimization of the workers in this book. Rather, the author tries to show them as active agents with limited choices.
While the day-to-day personal narrative portions keep the reader very interested, these are interspersed among insightful sections of well-researched analysis and historical/political context.
I learned a lot from this book and I would recommend it highly to anyone who has even a small interest in immigration and the lives of immigrants.

a must-read on immigration

A friend of mine recommended this book, which is about undocumented immigration from the point of view of undocumented workers. I was skeptical, because I have no tolerance for political rhetoric, but this book is humanizing and easy to access. In fact, it reads sort of like a novel, in that it draws you in with personal stories, but it also seems to be well-researched with smart political and historical analysis. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more information about migration in the United States. I learned more about undocumented migration from reading this book than I have from following the news for the last five years.

More for the business professional, less for the information systems engineer

This book presents essentially everything a business professional needs to know before deciding to adopt SAP for his/her business. It will also help the IT managers and administrators who will be managing and administrating the system within that business. What this book presents are, a discussion of the functional capabilities of SAP (including the ERP and other core business components, as well as the various foundation elements), the processes and people involved in an SAP project, a primer on the security issues regarding SAP, integration options with third-party tools, a primer on cloud-based SAP, and some administrative topics.

However, if you are an information systems engineer who is looking for a comprehensive understanding of all the elements in an SAP system, particularly with regards to technically deploying SAP, then you might want to look elsewhere (although you will still want to buy this book for your pre-deployment reference). This book does not contain details on deploying, configuring and kick-starting modules, such as FI/CO, AS, MM, HR, etc. It also does not give you the specifics of integrating all these components together to give you a full SAP installation. Nor does it give you the details on the various business configurations necessary to make a functional SAP system 'usable' (which I am still looking for in other literature).

Good book to understand what SAP is, a high level overview

I used this book soon after graduating from college. I was given an opportunity to interview for an SAP position where I was interning. I was interning in the technical network area. I bought this book to help solidify my generic knowledge of SAP. Really helped me understand SAP at high level, but it's definitely not useful in explain the ins and outs of all that is SAP. There are transactions in SAP that could have entire books written about them. That being said for someone completely lacking SAP experience or knowledge this book is great. Vice versa, this book is awful if you are trying to learn about detailed workings within SAP.

My favorite SAP book

This is my favorite SAP book so far. I have read a number of SAP books and some were too technical and some too high level. I think this one was right in the middle. I am a software professional with ERP experience with other ERP systems so I was looking for a book that gave me a basic understanding of SAP. The book helped me understand both the technical and functional side of SAP. The only issue I had was that installing SAP was not an option for me and I did not have access to an SAP system. I read the chapter about installing SAP but I was concerned it may conflict with existing software. Maybe a future option would be to provide temporary access to a hosted SAP system for book readers.

Simply Breath Taking!

I love this book! I've read it countless times and it never bores me. Blade and Anna have been connected psychically since Anna was 11 and an attempt was made on her life. Several years later, Anna is still in danger when she and Blade finally meet after another attempt on Anna's life. When they meet its kismet and their romance is ignited. Although Anna has been on the run for years, you do not pity her; rather admire her strength and route for her. Blade is the ultimate hero: loving and gentle with a fierceness to protect what he loves. I travel with my job, and I always bring this book with me. The characters are wonderfully written, the plot is great, and there are moments that just enrapture me. There's a scene where Anna figures out that she's in love with Blade. Every time I read it, I love this scene more.
After reading Blade's Lady, I hunted down her other books Cullen's Bride and Heart of Midnight. They were both well worth the hunt. If you love Linda Howard's Mackenzie books or Suzanne Brockmann's Tall Dark & Dangerous books, you'll adore Fiona Brand's books.

I read Marrying McCabe(my personal favorite) and once I did I had to hunt down the others from this series. Blade and Anna have been connected since she was 11 and he was 17. She's been running from her step-father for the last 10 years since he was trying to kill her to collect her inheritance. Blade has had "flashes" and dreams of Anna but has always thought that they were in his mind. Now he's found her and he's determined to keep her but first they have to solve the problem of her step-father. Fiona Branda's books remind me of early Linda Howard(Mackenzies espcecially) They are sensual and fun to read. It's very rare that I find a "new" author that goes right to the top of my favorites list. This book and other from this series are heading right for my keeper shelf and I will be waiting for more by her!!

Excellent Book! An author to watch...

Blade's Lady is one of the best books I've read this year - definitely a keeper. The characters are strong and interesting, and the suspenseful plot keeps the action moving. Anna Tarrant dreamed of a gallant knight for years, never imagining he was real. Blade Lombard heard her desperate cries in his dreams for years, never quite believing they were real. The coming together of these two characters was exciting and realistic. There is a brief appearance by Blade's brother Gray and his wife Samantha, (from Heart of Midnight) and Cullen and Rachel (from Cullen's Bride). If you like Linda Howard's novels, you will LOVE Fiona Brand! I can't think of enough wonderful things to say about her writing!
