There, Cam overhears a conversation between a distressed hotel guest and Michael, the bellhop. Esther Wright states that on her arrival, she gave her luggage and her traveling companion, "Little Tiger," to a bellhop outside the hotel to take to her room. The cat never made it there. A ransom-demanding phone call confirms Esther's worst fears-"Little Tiger" has been catnapped. Cam once again solves the mystery and helps catch the crook. With her photographic memory, she makes mental notes of events and details that the rest of her family and friends dismiss. Pen-and-ink drawings appear frequently throughout, and a visual puzzle to solve is included at the end. Another fine mystery for beginning chapter-book readers.

Cam Jansen manages to solve every case without the use of magic... she's a real girl. That's what makes her special and what makes you want to red more and more. Cam Jansen is a real kid superhero, and the thought that a person like her could actually exist... makes her the best kid detective ever! Our family loves Cam Jansen!

I've always been fascinated by the three men rescued from crosses at Tekoa, too. Since only one survived, it surely would have been a seeming miracle to those in the vicinity. As the story spread, it became apocryphal, steeped as it was in messianic and apocalyptic times. Given the overwhelming numbers of other coincidental episodes that link Josephus, the gospels, and the Essenes, Vermeiren's hypothesis about the retrograde chronology of Christian origins is completely plausible and fascinating to boot. A must read!

About the Author

Darlene Clark Hine is a Board of Trustees professor of African-American studies and professor of history at Northwestern University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former president of the Organization of American Historians and of the Southern Historical Association. Hine received her B.A. at Roosevelt University in Chicago and her MA. and Ph.D. from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Hine has taught at South Carolina State University and at Purdue University. She also taught at Michigan State University where she was John A. Hannah professor of history. She was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University. She is the author and/or co-editor of 15 books, most recently The Harvard Guide to African American History (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2000), co-edited with Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and Leon Litwack. She co-edited a two-volume set with Earnestine Jenkins, A Question of Manhood: A Reader in Black Men’s History and Masculinity (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1999, 2001) and one with Jacqueline McLeod, Crossing Boundaries: Comparative History of Black People in Diaspora (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2000pk). With Kathleen Thompson she wrote A Shining Thread of Hope: The History of Black Women in America (New York: Broadway Books, 1998) and edited More Than Chattel: Black Women and Slavery in the Americas (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1996) with Barry Gaspar. She won the Dartmouth Medal of the American Library Association for the reference volumes co-edited with Elsa Barkley Brown and Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, Black Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia (New York: Carlson Publishing, 1993). She is the author of Black Women in White: Racial Conflict and Cooperation in the Nursing Profession, 1890–1950 (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1989). Her forthcoming book is entitled The Black Professional Class: Physicians, Nurses, Lawyers, and the Origins of the Civil Rights Movement, 1890–1955.

 

William C. Hine received his undergraduate education at Bowling Green State University, his master’s degree at the University of Wyoming and his Ph.D. at Kent State University. He is a professor of history at South Carolina State University. He has had articles published in several journals, including Agricultural History, Labor History and the Journal of Southern History. He is currently writing a history of South Carolina State University.

 

Stanley Harrold, a professor of history at South Carolina State University, received his bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Kent State University. He is co-editor of Southern Dissent, a book series published by the University Press of Florida. In 1991-1992 and 1996-1997 he had National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships. In 2005 he received an NEH Faculty Research Award.  His books include: Gamaliel Bailey and Antislavery Union (Kent, Ohio:  Kent State University Press, 1986), The Abolitionists and the South (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 1995), Antislavery Violence: Sectional, Racial, and Cultural Conflict in Antebellum America (co-edited with John R. McKivigan; Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press,  1999), American Abolitionists (Harlow, U.K.: Longman, 2001), Subversives: Antislavery Community in Washington, D.C., 18280-1865 (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2003), The Rise of Aggressive Abolitionism: Addresses to the Slaves (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 2004), Civil War and Reconstruction: A Documentary Reader (Oxford, U.K.: Blackwell, 2007) and Border War: Fighting over Slavery before the Civil War (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2010). He has published articles in Civil War History, Journal of Southern History, Radical History Review and Journal of the Early Republic.

This is an excellent book showing you a wide variety of techniques that illustrate the principles of jujutsu - a traditional martial arts that focuses on self defense and combat jujutsu. A must have for any dojo teaching self defense techniques!

Excellent Book on Jujutsu

Veteran martial artist Ben Bergwerf (9th Dan) has done an excellent job of providing us with a nicely illustrated manual of traditional and modern jujutsu skills and techniques. To help the reader the author provides clear narrative, color photos of techniques that are easy to follow, and employs both English and Japanese terms in describing the huge number of techniques covered in this book. This is a tremendous contribution and those martial artists (teachers and students) who define themselves as practitioners of Traditional Jujutsu will find great value in this book. Bergwerf Sensei is both a teacher and a scholar of Jujutsu and I applaud him for sharing with us his vast knowledge and experience. The manual sells for $58 on Amazon Prime but if you choose to buy it, it'll be money well spent!

Jujutsu Manual :: Best I've seen in 50 years.

This is the best presentation of jujutsu in book form that I have seen in 50 years. The photographs are detailed in each move and comprehensive in set up and design. The verbal instructions for the moves are linked appropriately to each photograph and describe clearly the actions involved. I have been a martial arts practitioner for many years and of differing styles. This course of instruction is excellent and well worth the modest cost to have available such a course as done by these two highly ranked Sensei. If at all interested in the martial arts:: Buy it !!

I took the American Literature CLEP test, and this little book had everything I needed to get a good score on the test. It's definitely worth it to get it - it's a quick read, without fluff - just straight to the facts. If you are looking for a compact guide to American Literature - this book will do it for you wonderfully!

Take it from an English Prof

As an English professor, I am always curious about the accuracy and comprehensiveness of such products. I have to say that I really like this one. It is very clearly laid out and all authors and literary movements are put into their proper contexts. It is not for deep study of course (as some authors are not represented and some works of the authors present that are of significance are missing), but if you want a quick, general overview, this is the study notes guide for you. I liked it.

I bought this book to assist in my studying for the English Lit GRE. It wasn't particularly useful given its lack of substance, but more importantly, I noticed multiple errors (incorrect plot summaries, wrong dates, etc.). Stick with Norton.
