both my kids are hooked

My kids are Minecraft junkies so when I saw this book I had to order right away. They come running every night before bed for story time now that I have this book. It only took us 3 days reading a few minutes each night to finish the book and now they are hooked. I have ordered a few more and I can see having all of the ones available soon! It kept them both interested and talking about what would happen next. They liked to stop and fill me in on what certain things were because I didn't know. It has been great family reading time and Dr Block is great at what he does. I wish it was a longer book but I am sure there will be more to come so that is OK =) (kids are age 5 and 11)

About the Author

The authors are professors in the elite Masters Program in Financial Engineering at Baruch College, City University of New York, and have vast experience educating students who interview very successfully for quantitative positions (95% employment rate for 2007-2013 Baruch MFE graduates).

Dan Stefanica has been the Director of the Baruch MFE Program since its inception in 2002, and is the author of the best-selling A Primer For The Mathematics Of Financial Engineering and A Linear Algebra Primer for Financial Engineering. He teaches graduate courses on numerical methods for financial engineering, as well as pre-program courses on advanced calculus and numerical linear algebra with financial applications. His research spans numerical analysis, graph theory, and geophysical fluid dynamics. He has a PhD in mathematics from New York University and taught previously at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Rados Radoicic has been on the faculty of the Baruch MFE Program since 2006, teaching graduate courses on financial instruments, econometrics, and statistics, as well as pre-program courses on advanced calculus with financial applications. He has done extensive research in discrete and computational geometry, extremal combinatorics, and graph theory. He has a BS and a PhD in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Tai-Ho Wang has been on the faculty of the Baruch MFE Program since 2008, teaching graduate courses on stochastic processes and optimization methods, as well as pre-program courses in probability. His research spans fields as varied as quantitative finance, statistics, and Riemannian geometry. He has a PhD in applied mathematics from National Chiao Tung University.

A wonderful little book!

This is a wonderful little book! It fits in your pocket, so you can easily carry it with you and study it even during a crowded subway ride.
After a warm-up chapter, all questions presented in the book are just stated in a long list, with no accompanying solution after each question. So there is no temptation to immediately read the answer if you get stuck. This is a very thoughtful editorial choice and it fits very well with the aim of the book to train you for interviews.
Subsequent chapters provide detailed solutions to each question. Topics covered are: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Financial Instruments, C++ and Data structure, Monte Carlo and Numerical methods, Probability and Stochastic Calculus, Brain Teasers. The selection of topics fits very well with the kind of questions you will be likely to encounter. And the choice of questions for each topic is well balanced.
Study this book and you will have a pretty good idea of what to expect during quant interviews.

*Starred Review* In this sequel to Exodus (2008), 16-year-old Mara guides a ship of refugees north from New Mungo, hoping to find safe haven in Greenland now that their globally warmed world is almost completely submerged. Upon arrival their ship is sunk and they are enslaved by the barbaric inhabitants of Ilira, who live in apartment-style caves shuttered by automobile doors scavenged from the sea. Eventually Mara and a few others escape, hiking to an interior valley with a glacial lake where they settle permanently. Although told alternately by Mara, Fox, and Tuck, this is mostly Mara’s story—a plucky, imperfect heroine leading the way to an uncertain future in a hostile world filled with inhabitants who do whatever it takes to survive. Still, signs of hope emerge: Mara’s (and Fox’s) baby is born just as the group discovers their promised land; Fox finds encouragement in his campaign against world corruption; and Tuck rehabilitates himself from pirate and thief to builder of fantastic bridges. Sadly, Mara and Fox can no longer communicate (Tuck has stolen part of her cyberwizz, a tool for surfing the Weave), but with a forthcoming final volume in the works, fans can still hope for a reunion. Once again, Mara is setting sail, fleeing from one unstable place to the promise of others. Again she is headed north and again she is bringing bedraggled and hopeful survivors with her. Everyone is searching for the same thing. A safe place. A home. Land.

In a world where global warming has melted all of the polar ice caps and the world has been flooded, there doesn't seem to be much to hope for anymore. Mara led her family and friends north only to find that the New World city of New Mungo wasn't the salvation they had hoped for. Mara's cyberworld friend, Fox, has stayed behind to battle the corruption, while she sails north with Rowan, the Treenesters, the Urchins, and other escapees from New Mungo in search of the land Mara is sure exists.

Along the way, Mara will meet Tuck, a boy who has only ever lived on the sea. He lives on a floating "city" of connected boats, barges, and bridges, among people with a history of piracy. The navigational course that Fox programmed for Mara's ship didn't include such a civilization - and the ship causes damage to Tuck's people. He joins his people in pursuing the great ship with vengeance in his mind.

But, Tuck's people aren't the biggest threat facing Mara and the refugees of New Mungo. The safety of a distant land may also offer more danger than they ever imagined. And the very act of living is a hard-earned accomplishment as lives are won and lost in this inhospitable new world.

ZENITH is an exciting sequel to EXODUS; I found it to be even more intense and thrilling than the first novel. Julie Bertagna continues to describe a world that could be all too real if threats of global warming aren't taken to heart.

Not as great as I hoped, but...

This picks up right where the book Exodus leaves off. Mara is on a ship headed toward the top of the world after escaping New Mungo, the futuristic city in the sky. Mara isn't completely happy with this escape because she had to leave behind her beloved boyfriend (Fox). Fox decides to stay behind and cyber-fight the new city while Mara chooses to stay with her people and travel north--one of the only areas left in the world that has not been flooded by the oceans. When Mara and her people hit land, they are overjoyed...until they realize that people already living there plan to capture them and sell them as slaves.

Meanwhile, Tuck is on board a ship that is chasing Mara's ship north because he and his people want revenge for an accident Mara's ship caused. When they see Mara's ship being attacked, Tuck and his people use their weapons to fight the land-dwellers. When the battle is over, they head away but Tuck decides to stay on the land. Eventually, he joins Mara's group as they all search for a livable space on this strange new land at the top of the world.

This is a good story describing what Mara and the others go through as they fight for survival in a world that is nearly completely covered in water. Although they endure many hardships and lives are lost, they don't give up. We'll see what becomes of them in the upcoming final book in this series.

Definitely Intriguting and with Fascinating Settings

Mara Bell is leading a boat of Treenesters, urchins, and freed slaves in search of Greenland. But as they head toward what they think is land, their boat crashes into a floating city of barges and bridges.

Whilst definitely intriguing and with fascinating settings, ZENITH is not quite as grabbing as its predecessor, EXODUS. Maybe it's due to the lack of technology, or that I just didn't connect with the characters. Mara was awesome in Book 1, but here...she's less fabulous. However, the imagery is simply splendid, making me wish I could see aurora borealis (I don't think it's visible here in the Southern Hemisphere). The writing is lush, almost poetic at times, and I can't wait to read what'll happen in Book 3, AURORA. However, its publication is at least a year away, I'm guessing, but it leaves newcomers with plenty of time to acquire and devour Books 1 and 2. Futuristic YA is all the richer with Julie Bertagna's innovative contributions.

An excellent overview of video game history, critiques, and culture

This is by far the best (and maybe the only?) textbook on video games I have encountered. The chapter on history gave a good overview and didn't bore me; the philosophical and literature reviews were thorough without excess meanderings. The chapter on "serious games" and edutainment was one of the most coherent critiques of the educational games that came out of the behaviorist era that I have ever read (though in my opinion the application of theory in games like math blaster is somewhat misguided; the "rewards" for correct answers are too trivial).

Additionally, the authors themselves had opinions on other literature and game theory. One example that stood out to me was how they critiqued James Gee's book as lacking in an awareness of previous research, which I found accurate. The authors read and summarized books that I had dismissed as tangential and hence, saved me the trouble of reading them (i.e., Hamlet on the Holodeck).Through reading the narrative chapter I realized that the approach I took in my thesis toward analyzing "interactive fiction" was somewhat dated.

Sadly, the edition I read is marred by what appears to be a rush to the printers. Parentheses are left unresolved and words misspelled; a few paragraphs seem untouched by an editor. It is my hope that another addition will rectify these errors and also update the analysis to include more recent trends.

This book is ok... I really wish that it was spiral bound. I also really wish that the radiograph they are referencing to was on the same page; it's difficult and confusing to have to flip back and forth. Really, each radiograph should have had it's own page with the description, even if it meant adding more pages. Also, the book is too small and flimsy.

Still the best for study and review.

This textbook is a great review for the practitioner and study aide for the student. The oral pathology section shows in great detail the descriptions to look for in any radiograph. But I never discount the section on normal landmarks since many of my student and myself always need to review these items to make sure we do a complete professional service for our dental patients. When redoing the text for the next edition, a second color might be nice and a longer section on quizzes, possibly with some case histories?

A basic dental radiography book that works

Required for my OSU dental classes and is quite competant. It does, however, seem to just restate everything in the other books by these authors

Expensive!

I deeply love Red Pandas so I was excited to get this book. However it's VERY expensive. It's meant to be a textbook (I would LOVE to take this class) so it's really full of information, but it was more school type rather than for lovers of Red Pandas.

This book was worth every penny! As a student of conservation biology, it was detailed and educational. Not only does it discuss current research regarding the Red Panda, but it also had recommendations for future research that is needed to better understand this adorable creature.
