Joe Meek was an iconoclastic British recording innovator who was also, among other things, a paranoid schizophrenic homosexual speed freak who believed he was in psychic communication with Buddy Holly and who murdered his landlady with a shotgun before shooting himself in 1967.

Cleveland, however, takes an industry perspective, focusing primarily on Meek’s 12-year professional recording career, rather than his personal life.

Joe Meek’s best-known recording, “Telstar,” topped the charts worldwide in 1962, and he engineered and produced dozens of U.K. hits. The extensive roster of fine musicians that graced Meek’s recordings includes guitarists Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Howe, and Jimmy Page (Page credits Meek as having been a major influence on his own production).

Joe Meek was also responsible for many recording “firsts,” at least in the U.K. For example, he was

Nice technically focused biography of Joe Meek

Having recently re-discovered "Telstar" (the song, not the movie) since my childhood days, I've been getting more and more intrigued by Joe Meek. Not having read John Repsch's biography, which is out of print anyway, I decided to give Barry Cleveland's 'Joe Meek's Bold Techniques' a go.

First of all, with the printed book, you get a CD with Meek's "I hear a new world", remastered by the author. I ordered the Kindle edition and wondered about the CD, obviously is was not going to be included in an electronic version. Quite simply, there are a bunch of MP3 links at the end of the book to the author's own site with the files, so yes, it is included in the electronic version too, a nice touch.

I found the book very interesting. Just as the title says, it focuses on the techniques and technologies that Meek used, in fact there's almost a bit too much focus on exactly which tape recorders etc he owned and used. In complement there is a substantial amount of biographical information too, as well as analyses of several of Meek's productions, including "I hear a new world" and "Telstar".

Being an amateur musician and sound tinkerer, as well as an electrical engineer by profession, I found it all very interesting. The book nicely balances the raison-d'etre of Meek, namely his producing and recording skills, with biographical background information to give a complete picture.

A final note: if you are planning to watch "Telstar - the movie", I'd suggest reading a biography such as Cleveland's first. There are lots of subtle references in the film that will pass you by otherwise, and on its own the film doesn't paint a pretty picture of a man who was indeed a genius.

Excellent and thorough treatment of a pioneer in audio

Barry Cleveland has done a superb job of exploring the technical ins and outs of the Joe Meek sound. The storied producer is more well-known for his eccentric (to say the least) personality and his tragic ending (he killed his landlady with a shotgun, then committed suicide) but many of his recording techniques were innovative and influential, even in this day and age, where computers rule. Some of the sounds he got on his records were so unique, a novice might have difficulty piecing together exactly how Meek wove his magic (one of his secrets was a heavy reliance on hand-built, hand-wired equipment, frequently of less-than-optimum quality) and that's where Cleveland's book is invaluable, as he painstakingly guides the reader through the techniques developed by this unsung pioneer in audio. If you're a recording student, or simply a fan of Meek's work, this book is a must-have!

I highly recommend this great book

As a gear head, Joe meek fan and a Londoner that grew up near Holloway Road in the sixties I found this book utterly fascinating. The author's analysis of much of Meeks output, songs and production strategies, was impeccably explained in the most thorough and detailed way. The technical explanations of the now "vintage" gear that Meek used was extremely well documented. The book caused me to discover many songs that I had never heard before. I highly recommend this great book.

Avoid the Kindle version if Locations are an obstacle to page-specific textbook assignments!

This is a textbook that uses Kindle Locations instead of page numbers. Locations are virtually impossible to use for coursework assignments. Why is there no conversion tool between specific print versions and Kindle versions? I really do get the logic behind locations, but they do not jive well with applications that require specific page numbers. Physical textbooks are cumbersome and Kindle makes it easier to carry and use multiple texts, but location removes all convenience in that it makes it impossible to find assigned readings that correspond to specific pages.
It would be nice if the use of locations was abundantly clear before making purchases, and even better if there was an easy conversion. Including page numbers is not difficult, and other e-reader formats solve the issue by simply making printed page-breaks fall as a dotted line falling where ever the page number changes in the e-reader screen. The logic of locations does appeal to me, but a central flaw of the Kindle's logic is that it is not convenient for all uses. Kindle's logic assumes that one inherently will have the desire and need to read every word of a book in the sequence it was published. While location does allow one to find specific text in a similar manner to page numbers, the absolute flaw is that not everyone measures within the confines of Kindle's location logic. There should be either a kindle version for each printed ISBN, or an easy conversion within the Kindle version.

Not proofread

I had to buy this book for an MBA class. It was a very frustrating read. There were NUMEROUS grammatical errors - some of them were even comical (ex. using the word "entree" instead of "entry" twice on page 127)!

The writing style, sentence structure, and grammar were so bad that I had a hard time focusing on the content. I would be embarrassed if I were the publisher - John Wiley & Sons.

I would strongly not recommend this book.

The writing in this book is awful for a textbook. The book is also full of more opinions rather than fact and research. I agree with the previous post, the grammar is atrocious and it was hard to concentrate on the content that was there to find.

Simple, Straight-forward and from a legit source

I've been ordering the powdered product for quite sometime now but have always thought that it would/should be fairly easy to grow at home and I was right. It's been a couple months since I've set up my little tank and I'll get about a tablespoon a day from it, which is perfect to supplement my diet with. Plus, I'm amazed at how good the spirulina tastes! You can literally the whole tablespoon plain no prob, tastes almost like an egg yolk, with a creamier texture. Plus, growing it your self is soooo cool! Friends are always asking me what it is and I love having them try the fresh stuff, they are always surprised how good it tastes. Also, Dr. Wolf-Baum (who apparently is also a NASA algae scientist) is available for questions if you need him. I hight recommend this book, especially for 10 bucks :)

Dr. Baum is very well trained on the subject matter. This becomes obvious when you read the book. Being well trained or educated is one skill set. Being able to make this sometimes technical information easy to understand for the diverse population who are interested in this subject is another skill set. Dr. Baum has both of these skill sets in spades. He is a natural born teacher. I can't wait for his next book. Paul Nagle, Taylor, Texas.

Excellent introductory guide to "farming" your own superfood in your living space. I sincerely appreciate that Dr. Baum tells you precisely how to mix your own growth medium. It shows me that he is more interested in the widespread dissemination of this knowledge, than he is in simply making a buck.

East meets West onstage

If you liked the segments of the film "The Joy Luck Club" which took place in China, you'll love David Henry Hwang's play "Golden Child." Although Hwang is probably better known for his play "M. Butterfly," "Golden Child" is a remarkable piece of writing which deserves attention. According to the production history included in the book version, an early version of "Golden Child" premiered in 1996, and a later version was presented at Broadway's Longacre Theatre in 1998. But "Golden Child" is also one of those plays which succeeds purely as a readers' text.
"Golden Child" opens with Andrew, a Westernized man of Chinese heritage, who is visited by the ghost of his Chinese-born mother. This brief prologue leads to the story of his mother's girlhood in China. We meet Andrews's grandfather, Tieng-Bin; Tieng-Bin's three wives; and the Western clergyman who seeks to convert them to Christianity.
"Golden Child" is a thought-provoking exploration of family life and cross-cultural contact. There is both humor and tragedy in the dialogue. The story addresses such topics as polygamy, foot-binding, ancestor worship, and opium use in traditional Chinese culture. Hwang's ironic portrayal of the politics of "conversion" may be a revelation to those Western Christians who harbor romantic, idealistic notions about bringing the "light" to non-European peoples. I was very impressed with Hwang's writing, and I highly recommend "Golden Child."

A highly underrated masterpiece

I will never understand why this play tanked in New York. It is a simple, elegant tale about assimilation and familial dysfunction. David Henry Hwang is a masterful writer, and this is some of his best work. The only weakness is its ending, which falls a little flat as a character (who is clearly the author) explains the entire point, as if the audience missed it. Although this (like most of his work) is about Chinese, it should be read by people of all walks of life.

Virtually Flawless

I don't normally read plays. I always feel as if I will be missing something by reading the script rather than seeing it performed. After reading David Henry Hwang's "Golden Child", however, I am hoping that I will one have the opportunity to see this play in person.

Hwang mentions in the introduction that "Golden Child" underwent several rewrites until the final draft was completed. The end product, to me, is utterly flawless. A perfect mesh of comedy and tragedy unfolds as Hwang confronts the effects a man's conversion to Christianity has in early 20th century China.

A very captivating read, I highly recommend David Henry Hwang's "Golden Child".

rhythm reading

This book of rhythmic studies is intended for undergraduate college/university level study.

Features include:
-lots of exercises in simple and compound metres and some in irregular metres.
-beginning chapters introducing rhythmic cells in simple time (with quarter note beat) and compond time (with dotted quarter note beat)
-following chapters using different note values as the beat (dotted half note, half note, eighth note, dotted eighth note, etc.)
-practice in reading economical notational devices such as measured tremolo, multi-measure rests etc.
-brief introduction to hypermetre
-chapters on different sub-divisions of the beat (e.g. quintuplets)
-introduction of basic conducting patterns
-some 2 pt exercises (for one player) and some with two & three parts for ensemble playing

Kazez introduces many rhythmic cells in both simple and compound time and gives suggested speech cues for each as memory aids. Some examples of speech cues used in this book:

-"ba-ker" - two even eighth notes performed in the place of a quarter note beat (or two even quarter notes in the place of a half note beat, etc.)

-"te-le-phone" sixteenth note, sixteenth note, eighth note - performed over one quarter note beat.

-"pa-sta" Dotted eight note, sixteenth note

-etc.

The speech cues aren't essential to the book though. It's possible to use other rhythmic syllable systems, such as Takadimi or Kodaly-based syllables.

A truly helpful book

For any of you looking for a good book on rhythm reading the book by Daniel Kazez titled "Rhythm Reading - Elementary Through Advanced Training" is quite good. Daniel Kazez is a cellist and teaches at Wittenberg, University in Springfield, Ohio.
It moves from simple rhythmic principles to more complex with lots of practice exercises. It introduces each rhythmic figure as a cell and focuses on the rhythmic patterns with simple word patterns that help in the initial learning. The book also has exercises that contain many rests. So many other books of this type consist of endless patterns of rhythmic figures without rests. Having to count through rests increases the difficulty and gives much better overall musical practice. Most of the exercises are written on single lines and really focus on the rhythm rather than trying to read notes on the usual 5 line staff. Later in the book there are more musical examples to help put the rhythms in musical context. There are review questions after each chapter and listings of pieces of music that illustrate the various rhythms just studied.
All in all it is a very good book for anyone wanting to improve their rhythmic skills.
