On his death, Austin Tappan Wright left the world a wholly unsuspected legacy. Among this distinguished legal scholar's papers were thousands of pages devoted to a staggering feat of literary creation - a detailed history of an imagined country complete with geography, genealogy, representations from its literature, language and culture. In a monumental labor of love Wright's wife and daughter culled from this material a thousand page novel, as detailed as J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Islandia has similarly become a classic touchstone for those concerned with the creation of imaginary worlds.
Islandia occupies the southern portion of the Karain Continent, which lies in the Southern Hemisphere. Its civilization is an ancient one, protected from outside intervention by a natural fortress of towering mountains. To this isolated country - this alien, compelling and totally fascinating world - comes John Lang, the American consul. As the reader lives with Lang in Islandia, as he comes to know this magnetic land, its unique people, its strange customs, he may find himself experiencing a feeling of envy, a wish that he, like Lang, be permitted, at the book's end, to return once more and spend the rest of his days in Islandia.

... feet to the fire and *had* to choose my favorite book of all time
By Suzecav
If I had my feet to the fire and *had* to choose my favorite book of all time, it would be Islandia. As have many reviewers said, it is a book that one reads again and again. I read it every summer since I discovered it, some 47 years ago. I have purchased and re-purchased it, as I have gifted many copies. In one case, I gave a copy to a friend who is a well known Mountain climber. When he mounted his next climb, he divided the book into sections which could be passed down the mountain to each below climber. I understand that it was a tremendous success. If ever a book would benefit from being in Kindle format, it is this one. At my age, with arthritis, it is all that I can do to hold up the paperback version. And, with 1000 plus pages, the font in my version is likely 10 pterodactyl type; I would pay a good sun to own this on Kindle and be able to both hold it comfortably as well as adjust the font!
Mr. Bezos, I sincerely hope that you will receive this recommendation!

I almost bought it... AGAIN!
By R. LaMee
I have three copies, a softcover, this hardcover edition, and a first edition. I've bought several other copies over the years as I stumbled across them so I could give them away--hence the urge to have another "on hand." I've read Islandi four times over the last 35 years and I guess you either love the detailed, highly descriptive narrative or it bores the hell out of you. Me? Obviously I love it and imagine I'll read it two or three more times before I die. It's always something to look forward to.

Major Project by a Serious Thinker
By Michael Glaviano
This is a long book that was, evidently, a long-term avocation of the author. I gather that the book was published, posthumously, by his survivors. It has lots of detail and heft. I purchased this for my wife, who read the entire book. She enjoyed parts of it but had mixed feelings about the pacing of the book as well as the way Wright wrapped things up. You should probably read it and decide for yourself.
