About the Author
Dr. Walter Nicholson is the Ward H. Patton Emeritus Professor of Economics at Amherst College and a visiting professor at Ave Maria University, Naples, Florida. Throughout his teaching career, Dr. Nicholson has sought to develop in students an appreciation for the value of economic models in the study of important social questions. He also has enjoyed showing students some of the stranger things that economists have sought to model. Dr. Nicholson received his Ph.D. in economics from MIT. Most of his research is in the area of labor economics, especially policy questions related to unemployment. He lives in Naples, Florida and Montague, Massachusetts, where he and his wife enjoy the frequent visits of their eight grandchildren.

Dr. Christopher Snyder is the Joel Z. and Susan Hyatt Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, where he pursues research and teaching interests in microeconomic theory, industrial organization, and law and economics. He is a research associate in the National Bureau of Economic Research, serves on the board of the Industrial Organization Society, and is an associate editor of the Review of Industrial Organization. Snyder received his Ph.D. from MIT. His recent research has appeared in leading economics journals, including the Review of Economics and Statistics and Quarterly Journal of Economics. He lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his wife, who also teaches economics at Dartmouth, and three daughters.

Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D. is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst in private practice, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California Medical Center, and an internationally known lecturer. Proud to be a Crone: Now that I know what one is...

There IS a book for the phase of life and the important things that change with it for women middle aged or older. And this one does not harp on the stuff we all know: the losses. This points out the GAINS!!! And they are many. It didn't take a bit of twinkle out of my eye to see that someone had written it out since she has more juicy and wonderfully wise pieces of information than I have. It's short, hard bound, easy to read, but I still had to slow down because what is said is often simple and profound at the same time. Worth the money.

What plastic surgery can't give us---renewal and meaning

Yeah, sure the cosmetics industry and plastic surgery doctors promise maturing women with returned nubile faces, plumped lips and smoother neck, but they sure can't give us the self-acceptance and self-love that Jean, in this book, helps us discover---new meaning for our post 50s years. This book opened my eyes and my heart to what my life can be like in my maturing years and helped me look forward to that time, envision it and be excited about it. Will any glossy-covered fashion magazine will offer this kind of information to their readers if it competes with their advertisers! The book is short-ish and easy to read, but its enough to comfort me and get me excited about who I am still growing to be. My catholic upbringing nor my matriarchal family-community background in the Philippines verbalized or gave me words for the mature woman's archetype of Crone, much less the Maiden and Mother---I was mostly made familiar with the "madonna-whore" syndrome in our conservative society! To begin to discover the triple archetypes and explore the crone is a filling-in of the gaps of ignorance-learning by a society that could limit me by withholding wise, nurturing and healing teachings---but now I found this book. I have also read her other book Goddesses in Everywoman, and will continue to seek more in Jean's other books and others'. Men, btw, can benefit from reading this book and others by Jean, for even they need self-nurturing and can further blossom too and in their older years. Amazing isn't it that we can still learn new things even as we get along in our decades.

Highly Concentrated

I have found wisdom and guidance in Jean Shinolda Bolen's books since I read "Crossing to Avalon" many years ago. This book is short and pithy. Very short and very pithy. It is, in fact, concentrated...like sun-dried tomato paste or pomegranate syrup. My own desire would have been for more depth and development, but its advantage as it stands is in an almost haiku quality. I read it, one chapter a night, for several nights and reading it that way makes it a form of meditation. I suspect it would be a delightful gift from one woman in the crone years to a younger one just entering that stage of existence. If you are looking for honesty, humor and challenge, this is your book. However, if this is the first Bolen book you read, don't stop here! Pick up one of her others: "Goddesses for Older Women," "Crossing to Avalon," "Goddesses for Everywoman," and delve even deeper into her ideas.

Captain Wallin salvaged most of the broken Pearl Harbor fleet that went on to figure prominently in the United States Navy’s victory. So the account he masterfully tells covers what he masterfully accomplished. The United States owes him an unpayable debt for this high service among many others in his long career.

Salvage after tragedy: first person account

Having just visited Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial last week[December 9th,2004] I recalled reading this book several years ago. I went over it again and recommend it highly. In crisp, no nonsense prose, Admiral Wallin tells us his view of the attack, and how he directed the salvage of 5 of the 8 battleships sunk on December 7,1941. For me, seeing the shattered remnant of the Arizona, tomb to 1177 Sailors and Marines[about 900 bodies remain]with Admiral Wallin's poignant description of the salvage and rescue efforts, delivered powerful reminders of the evil act of that first day of the war between Japan and America. There is the stirring saga of the rebirth of those shattered dreadnoughts, 5 of which fought successfully in the Battle for Leyte Gulf in 1944 to repay the enemy for treachery.

This book is not well known to history buffs, since it contains some technical details of how to refloat a 35,000 ton sunk battleship; nonetheless the author provides an insight into the tragedy not available easily even in other sources.

incredible story unknown to most WWII buffs

I had no idea of the extent or speed of the Pearl Harbor salvage operation nor the critical role the recovered ships served in the war. It makes one wonder if we have that capability (and will) today. The opening of the book gives a very deep analysis of the root causes of the war that provide a great understanding of the drivers behind WWII.

Like many first hand accounts of WWII, the book is not a literary work of art with a lot of flowery descriptions or buzzwords. It doesn't flow as smoothly as a novel. BUT, the matter-of-fact writing about this story with all the facts is a whole lot more valuable to me than some fluffy stuff written by a professional writer.

Well worth the read.

Star Struck

Great instructions for what appears to be a challenging project. The detailed instructions are suitable for a beginner but make sure you read the introductory pages. I bought this because I was fascinated with the strip piecing method of tumbling blocks that Marci demonstrates. It makes the construction of projects simple and so professional looking. Can't wait to get my hands on the ABC 3D Tumbling blocks book just released.

Oh My!

Haven't had a chance to do a project from this book yet but I am so pleased with it. I highly recommend it for those who want something different.

Easy way to make star blocks, with amazing results!

With this book, I have just discovered a different way to put stars together, and can't wait to try it out. It uses a Clearview Triangle 60 degree ruler, which I just bought, as you strip-piece the stars. Yes, instead of sewing Y-seams, you sew stratas, cut them with the ruler, align the pieces and sew them on strips, then join the strips to make the stars.

Marci gives an overview of how to cut the stars using the Clearview Triangle ruler at the beginning of the book, and then covers it in more detail under General Instructions (pay special attention to the pictures, and to how the ruler is turned different ways as you cut the strata). However, the tutorial videos posted on her site (find them here) are, in my opinion, indispensable for understanding the process and getting it right.

The patterns on the book are so tempting! I can' wait to make them...

Great Grammar book!

I am currently studying Gaeilge (Irish) on my own and am taking classes. This is a great book and with the other "Gaeilge Gan Stro!" books, I would highly recommend it. Only one thing to keep in mind, it is all in Irish but that hasn't stopped me yet.
